Marcelo Álvarez

Marcelo Álvarez (Tenor)

Born: 27th February 1962, Córdoba, Argentina

Nationality: Argentine

The Argentine tenor Marcelo Álvarez was born in Córdoba in 1962 and sang from an early age, but spent his early career working for his family’s furniture business, only resuming voice lessons at the age of 30; his mentors included Giuseppe di Stefano and Luciano Pavarotti. Álvarez began his singing career in bel canto repertoire, first in Italian houses, but by the mid-2000s was in international demand for heavier roles such as Manrico (Il trovatore), Cavaradossi (Tosca), Alvaro (La forza del destino), and Don José (Carmen).

His discography includes numerous DVD and Blu-ray recordings, such as the Duke in Graham Vick’s production of Rigoletto, Tosca with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker (‘Álvarez offers a vocally generous Cavaradossi, delivered with ringing tone and emotional warmth’ – Opera Magazine), the title-role in Massenet’s Werther (opposite Elīna Garanča’s Charlotte), and Manrico from the Metropolitan Opera.
