The Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski was born in Warsaw in 1969 and trained at the Chopin Academy and in Strasbourg, Lyon and Los Angeles; his teachers included Fou Ts’ong, Leon Fleisher and Murray Perahia. In 1990 he abandoned a performance in the semi-finals of the Leeds Piano Competition part-way through due to being unhappy with his playing, but his career nonetheless took off over the course of the following year.

His discography includes a Gramophone Award-winning account of JS Bach’s English Suites, Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 25 and 27 with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (‘splendidly effortless’ – BBC Music Magazine), Shostakovich chamber works with the Belcea Quintet, and a Schumann album for Virgin Classics which was Disc of the Year at the BBC Music Magazine Awards in 2012.

Anderszewski’s other prizes and honours include the Gilmore Artist Award, the Royal Philharmonic Society Award in 2001, and the 1999 Szymanowski Prize (Anderszewski has championed the composer’s music throughout his career, and won a Gramophone Award in 2006 for his ‘visceral and superhuman’ interpretations of Masques, the Third Piano Sonata and Métopes on Warner).
