Alessandro Melani is one of the most underrated composers of the Seventeenth Century. Very little is known about him but he left behind a treasure trove of church music and operas. One of his most famous works, the mini opera L’Europa, is featured on this recording. The music is fresh and imaginative and certainly proves Melani deserved a prominent place in early music repertoire. Selected sacred compositions round off CPO’s portrait of this almost entirely forgotten composer. They are performed by the critically acclaimed Das Kleine Konzert and Hermann Max, an ensemble and conductor who have established themselves as masters in the art of performing early music. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Oratorio after Excerpts from the Poem by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock
This recording premiere of this impressive and stirring work marks the beginning of a CPO series in cooperation with the ZEIT Foundation and Deutschlandradio: Musica sacra Hamburgensis 1600-1800. Romberg wrote his Messiah in 1793 while in Bonn. He clearly regarded it as his main work and his favorite one as well, and he repeatedly returned to it for revisions. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Libretto: Wilhelm Smets
“The sonorous orchestrations - often with rich brass and woodwind, and even two harps I the penultimate number - are superbly played, and the chorus relish music that varies from David's heroic warriors to the bragging Philistines. CPO has produced a high-quality recording of a fascinating work.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2008 | | | (also available to download from $21.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Telemann: Cantatas Vol. 1
“The operatic quality of Telemann's cantatas is clear to the conductor, but not to all the performers. Intonation in the lower strings slackens and some solo vocalists, particularly in the fourth cantata, are technically unstable.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 ** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | 1851 arrangement by Robert Schumann
When Schumann was offered the post of music director in Düsseldorf in 1850, his first main project was to perform the St. John Passion, which had never been presented there, in April 1851: “It is much bolder, more powerful, and more poetic than the St. Matthew. This one seems to me not to be free of diffuseness and to be exceedingly long, but the other – how compact, how thoroughly genial, and of what art!” Robert Schumann | | | (also available to download from $21.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
| | | Oratorio in two parts
“This enjoyable performance perfectly illustrates Naumann's position as the most important Dresden composer between Hasse and Weber. Those who explore the remote byways of 18th-century music drama will find much to admire and enjoy here.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards 2006 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | J L Bach - Sacred Cantatas
“Hermann Max has returned to Johann Ludwig three times since making this recording…Yet his later accounts have never really bettered these engaging performances. The choir…sings with lithe sensitivity. The period instrument Das Kleine Konzert is also in top form, as is the quartet of vocalists. Barbara Schlick has her usual sweet brilliance.” Christopher Price (Goldberg Magazine) | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
| | | Handel - Solo Cantatas
“The fact that there is only one other recording of Un’ alma innamorata and no recording at all of the
remaining three works on this disc currently in the catalogue would surely be recommendation
enough for any lover of Handel’s vocal works. That the music is not only attractive and well crafted
but performed so engagingly and with such little artifice makes a purchase almost mandatory.
Veronika Winter engages with the texts in a straight-forward though far from strait-laced manner,
relying less on histrionics and more on the affecting nature of her full and gorgeously affecting
soprano voice…The fine recorded sound, bright and clear, is the icing on the cake of this laudable
release.” Robert Levett, International Record Review | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. (Available now to download.) |
