Plácido Domingo

Tenor

Plácido Domingo

Plácido Domingo (born January 21, 1941) is widely regarded as one of the finest singers of his generation, well-known for his versatile lyric-spinto voice, compelling theatricality and intelligent interpretations of over a hundred roles. Born in Madrid to parents who were zarzuela performers, he grew up in Mexico and made his operatic debut in Monterrey as Alfredo after spending several years singing as a baritone in zarzuela. After making many important role debuts with the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv, he returned to the US in 1965 to work for the New York City Opera and made his Met debut three years later, singing the title-role in Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur opposite Renata Tebaldi. He has since sung 40 seasons at the Met, and opened 21 seasons.

His vast discography encompasses most of the major Italian, Russian and French romantic roles, verismo, bel canto, Mozart and Wagner as well as contemporary operas such as Tan Dun's The Last Emperor, zarzuela and rarities such as Torroba's Luisa Fernanda and Puccini's Edgar: particularly acclaimed as Otello, José, Cavaradossi, Faust, Florestan, Lohengrin, Parsifal and (on disc only) Tristan, he continues to expand his repertoire well into his sixties, recently committing his first baroque role (Bajazet in Handel's Tamerlano) to DVD for Opus Arte. In addition to his singing roles, he has also forged a significant reputation as an opera conductor as well as acting as the General Director of the Washington National Opera in Washington, DC and the Los Angeles Opera.

Coro e Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, Michele Mariotti, Alvis Hermanis (dir.)

In his ‘new life’ as a baritone Plácido Domingo has triumphed in the role of Francesco Foscari in Los Angeles, London and Vienna. Now he takes to the role in La Scala, Milan, the theatre that is the symbol of Italian opera. I due Foscari, premiered in 1844, famously one of Verdi’s darkest operas, is staged by Alvis Hermanis, who made such an impact at the Salzburg Festival with Die Soldaten and Il trovatore. Domingo is joined by two of Italy’s most exciting singers, the soprano Anna Pirozzi and the tenor Francesco Meli, and the acclaimed Italian conductor Michele Mariotti. The Financial Times was deeply moved by Domingo’s performance, calling his interpretation of the role ‘sublime’.

Puccini: La fanciulla del West

Puccini: La fanciulla del West

Carol Neblett (Minnie), Plácido Domingo (Dick Johnson), Sherrill Milnes (Jack Rance)

Orchestra of the Royal Opera House & Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Zubin Mehta

This classic recording dating from 1977 is Gramophone magazine’s top choice for the opera and can now be enjoyed for the first time in full SACD hybrid multichannel sound.

Puccini’s late opera La fanciulla del West bristles with drama and intrigue in this newly remastered classic recording with Zubin Mehta conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House and starring Plácido Domingo, Sherrill Milnes and Carol Neblett.

“Carol Neblett is a strong Minnie, vocally distinctive and well characterised, while Plácido Domingo and Sherrill Milnes make a good pair of suitors …. Zubin Mehta conducts with real sympathy for the idiom” (Gramophone). And the Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and DVDs (2003/4) enthused “Domingo sings heroically … but the crowning glory of a masterly set is the singing of Carol Neblett … Full atmospheric recording to match.”

Although recorded in multi-channel sound, these memorable performances have previously been available only in the conventional two-channel stereo format. Using state of the art technology which avoids the need for re-mixing, our engineers have remastered the original studio tapes to bring the performances to life as originally intended: in compelling and pristine multi-channel sound.

''LA Opera's latest production of Verdi s Macbeth (2016) features Plácido Domingo in the title role and Russian mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk as Lady Macbeth. The opera is staged by Darko Tresnjak, who won a Tony Award for his direction of the Broadway musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder.

''When I was a young tenor, I loved playing romantic or heroic leading roles. When I began to add baritone parts to my repertoire six years ago, I was particularly interested in playing fathers, as I could draw from my own experience as a family man. Macbeth is a completely different kind of role for me. He is a murderer, but I think that he is also something of a victim, drawn into his crimes by the witches and by Lady Macbeth.'' Plácido Domingo''

“There is one outstanding performance: Ekaterina Semenchuk's Lady Macbeth, a mezzo with just the right kind of gritty yet gleaming tone - and a great top - to encompass Verdi's non-bel canto demands. She also acts with careful minimalism.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2017

Verdi: Il Trovatore

Verdi: Il Trovatore

Live from the Vienna State Opera, 1978

Raina Kabaivanska ( Leonora), Piero Cappuccilli (Il Conte di Luna ), Fiorenza Cossotto (Azucena), Plácido Domingo (Manrico), José van Dam (Ferrando)

Orchestra and Chorus of the Vienna State Oper, Herbert von Karajan (conductor and stage-director)

Il Trovatore was always one of Herbert von Karajan‘s favourite operas. He conducted it at the very beginning of his career and his first studio recording in 1956 was made in Milan with Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano, but „his“ Trovatore really made its mark in the legendary performances given at the Salzburg Festival in 1962, which formed the basis for this successful revival in Vienna. He once declared in an interview that what he loved about this opera was its archetypal human passions, its compression of highly dramatic situations into the smallest conceivable space and Verdi‘s genius for translating such situations into music.

This 1978 performance is steeped in scandal. Franco Bonisolli was originally cast in the lead role but abandoned the cast during a rehearsal where the public had been admitted entry, and, after throwing his sword at the conductor, left the stage in fury, to be later replaced by Plácido Domingo.

What this performance makes so special: Karajan not only conducted the opera, but he was also responsible for the stage direction.

“A truly glamorous cast and conductor for this Vienna production, directed by Karajan himself in the old-fashioned style. Fine music-making, though the dark-toned visuals are pure period-piece.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2017 ****

Verdi: Un ballo in maschera

Verdi: Un ballo in maschera

Plácido Domingo (Riccardo), Piero Cappuccilli (Renato), Katia Ricciarelli (Amelia), Elizabeth Bainbridge (Ulrica), Reri Grist (Oscar), William Elvin (Silvano), Gwynne Howell (Samuele), Paul Hudson (Tom), Francis Egerton (Un Giudice), John Carr (Un servo)

Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Royal Opera Chorus, Claudio Abbado (conductor) & Otto Schenk (director)

Illicit love, suspicion, deception and supernatural portents of doom lead to a shocking drama at a masked ball in 1790s Sweden. The incomparable Plácido Domingo stars as the dashing King Gustavus III, whose reforms have inspired talk of assassination among the conservative nobility. Katia Ricciarelli is Gustavuss beloved Amelia, married to his closest friend, Anckarström, sung by Piero Cappuccilli. Claudio Abbado conducts the distinguished cast, supported by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus, in Otto Schenks classic production of this Verdi favourite for The Royal Opera. This recording, with English subtitles, is preserved in its original Standard Definition and 4:3 picture format.

“The Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House are intelligently conducted by the great Claudio Abbado in this classic 1975 production directed by Otto Schenk, with traditional costumes and attractive sets. This is one of the finest productions of one of Verdi's best operas, with outstanding vocal and acting performances” New Classics, May 2017

“There's Claudio Abbado's fleet and polished conducting, then Plácido Domingo's suavely sung and acted Gustavus, and Piero Cappuccilli's stentorian Anckarström...Perhaps most interesting is Katia Ricciarelli as Amelia, a role a size too big for her, showing off both her stunningly limpid and velvety soprano and at the same time just how she pushed it to tatters.” Opera Now, June 2017 ****

“What Schenk achieves...is no mean feat: a show in which the main characters meaningfully interact, have credibility and generate sympathy...[Domingo] is enjoying himself as a devil-may-care ruler with a twinkle in both eye and voice...[Cappuccilli] offers a masterclass in what we really mean by ‘Verdi baritone’.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2017

“Abbado motivates this traditional Otto Schenk staging using the Swedish setting. Domingo is a marvellously vivid Gustavo, Cappuccilli an implacable Anckarström, while Grist steals the soprano honours from Ricciarelli.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2017 ****

“Claudio Abbado conducts a performance notable for its flexibility, sense of forward movement and keen balance.” Opera, September 2017

Two spectacular gala concerts from the stage of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, are brought together here in their unforgettable glory. In the 1993 Winter Gala, world-leading singers (including Plácido Domingo, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Kiri Te Kanawa) and dancers (including Darcey Bussell, Lesley

Collier, and Irek Mukhamedov) celebrate the music of Tchaikovsky, in highlights from such opera and ballet favourites as The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty. In the famously glittering 1996 gala concert, Domingo is joined by a cast of opera stars including Angela

Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and Susan Graham. Asher Fisch conducts this programme of great opera arias by composers including Bizet, Massenet, Gounod, Mozart and Donizetti.

These classic recordings are preserved in their original Standard Definition and 4:3 picture format, capturing The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet at a memorable period in their long history.
