Christian Elsner

Christian Elsner (Tenor)

Born: 11th August 1965, Freiburg im Breisgau

Nationality: German

The German tenor Christian Elsner was born in Freiburg in 1965 and counts Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau among his teachers. Though he made his operatic debut in Handel, he is now associated with the German dramatic repertoire, and in particular with Wagner: his discography includes the title-role in Parsifal, Loge in Das Rheingold and Mime in Siegfried (all for Marek Janowski’s acclaimed Wagner cycle on Pentatone), as well as Achilles in Wagner’s orchestration of Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide on Oehms (‘Elsner seems to me one of the most promising young tenors around’ – BBC Music Magazine).

On the concert-platform, Elsner is in demand for works such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (which he recorded for Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker on the orchestra’s own label) and Missa solemnis, Mendelssohn’s Paulus, and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde – he has recorded the latter work under the batons of both David Zinman and (in 1996) his late mentor Fischer-Dieskau (available on the Orfeo label).
