As the artist who has recorded longest with the BIS label, Hans Fagius has an impressive repertoire that includes organ music of several eras. Fagius' early organ lessons were with Nils Eriksson and Bengt Berg. His 1974 soloist's diploma from the Stockholm's Royal College of Music was earned under Alf Linder. That same year, he made his public debut in Stockholm. He spent the following year in Paris, doing private study with Maurice Duruflé. Fagius then began giving concerts, traveling to America and Australia, as well as throughout Europe. Although he has focused more and more on the Baroque, doing his own research into the era, he has performed and recorded organ works of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic eras, and works by Swedish composers of all eras. In the early 1980s in Stockholm, and again in 1996 in Copenhagen, Fagius performed a series of recitals to present the entirety of J.S. Bach's organ works, which he has also recorded. In addition, he has recorded the organ symphonies of Widor; the complete organ music of Kodály; and several duet albums with artists such as David Sanger, organ; Mats Jansson, piano; Rolf Leanderson, baritone; and Gunilla von Bahr, flute. |

The organ in the church of Leufsta Bruk (north of Uppsala) was built in 1726-28 by Johan Niclas Cahman, Sweden's foremost organ maker at the time. It is without comparison the most outstanding among the maintained baroque organs in Sweden. It has recently undergone a thorough restoration in order to bring it, as far as possible, back to its original state. Therefore, this CD demonstrates the sound and musical possibilities of the organ in all its former glory. Moreover, professor Fagius likes to show how congenially this instrument conveys J.S. Bach's matchless music. In addition to the commentary by professor Fagius, the booklet contains beautiful colour photos of the organ and also of the interior and surroundings of the church. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Mendelssohn - Organ Works
Hans Fagius at the Åkerman & Lund Organ in Kokkola Church, Finland Felix Mendelssohn was the first major composer after Bach to show real interest in the organ, and his two published sets of organ pieces are milestones in the development of romantic organ music. For this recording Hans Fagius plays on an ideal organ, newly built in the Classical and Romantic style which prevailed around the early decades of the 19th Century. “The first great composer after Bach to write a serious body of organ music, Mendelssohn left six Sonatas and other substantial pieces, all performed with majesty and intimacy by Hans Fagius on a responsive instrument in Kokkola, Finland.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 **** | | | (also available to download from $21.00) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. | | | Duruflé - Veni Creator: The Complete Organ Music
Hans Fagius (1928 Frobenius organ of Aarhus Cathedral, Denmark) “Listeners to his Requiem will recognise Duruflé's conservative and intensely personal musical language as heard in his organ music. The influence of Debussy, Dukas, Ravel, Tournemire and Vierne is evident, and like these composers Duruflé provides detailed performance indications. Hans Fagius, a former student of Duruflé's, scrupulously observes all the scores' markings, and this is one reason why he's now the top recommendation for this repertoire. His performances have a flexible, seamless flow, and the playing has a slight understated quality which gives more clarity and impact than Eric Lebrun's flamboyant accounts. Fagius's interpretations are close in spirit to the recordings by the composer and his wife Marie-Madeleine Duruflé- Chevalier, and it's a shame that their authoritative performances are marred by poor sound quality. By contrast, BIS's recording of the 89- stop four-manual organ in Århus Cathedral is superbly realistic. The choice of this instrument was inspired; it has all the appropriate colours and it's set in a warm, generous acoustic. Another bonus is the inclusion of the sensuous and recently discovered Meditation. Although the recordings by Lebrun and the Duruflés are very good, they must now stand aside and let this BIS disc take the place of honour, for this is a truly distinguished release of one of the finest corpus of organ music you'll ever hear.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
