“'Where e’er you walk' is the only recorded example of her singing this quintessential tenor aria. There is a definably oratorio austerity to her phrasing that announces real gravity...[There is] a rather delicious air of felicitous wit in Like as the love-lorn turtle” MusicWeb International, 12th November 2013

Isobel Baillie (soprano), Kathleen Ferrier (contralto), Heddle Nash (tenor) & William Parsons (baritone)

London Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir, Bruno Walter

This is a recording of a public performance in the Albert Hall in 1947 and the line-up of artists is certainly remarkable; Isobel Baillie, Kathleen Ferrier, Heddle Nash and William Parsons, not to mention Bruno Walter. Here Walter is in his prime and the first movement has a fiery, tough tension. He insistently presses forward in a reading of thrilling drama and power.

Kathleen Ferrier (contralto)

Kathleen Ferrier’s highly individual, plangent voice, natural musicianship and high level of personal professionalism made her one of England’s most popular singers during her all-too-brief career.

This disc compiles a large number of her recordings of arias by Bach and Handel, to whose music she brought breadth, nobility and deep emotional commitment. She is accompanied by Sir Adrian Boult and Reginald Jacques, both major figures in England’s post-war musical life.

The Cantata recording appears on CD for the first time.

“Ferrier, perhaps the finest British singer in the period following World War II, was a true contralto with technique and musicality that in the rarefied world of contraltos has never been surpassed” American Record Guide
