20 years after having worked on the soundtrack of Jacques Rivette’s movie “Jeanne la Pucelle”, Jordi Savall has decided to dedicate this new album to the mother figure of the struggle for French independence. Music fully enables us to rediscover this icon. Works by composers from the time of Joan of Arc (Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Johannes Vincenet, Johannes Cornago, etc.) but also compositions and arrangements by Jordi Savall paint the vivid portrait of a troubled time. Texts by Joan of Arc, including the record of her trial, are read in masterly fashion by French actress and director Louise Moaty. This well-documented CD-book demonstrates how a religion prepared to compromise all its principles for political reasons also takes the risk of becoming an icon of fanaticism. “ambitious and sumptuous...this presentation has been fashioned by Savall as a piece of music theatre, and as a vivid attempt to commemmorate Joan's life it is unlikely to be bettered.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 **** “The affections of baroque music are likened to the affections of the tango in this skillfully performed programme … charming performances” Classical Music, 1st December 2012 “an exhaustively researched account of the story of Joan of Arc, accompanied by early-music arrangements of period compositions rendered by Hespèrion XXI. Savall strives for imaginative representation: Dufay's "Veni Sancte Spiritus" is sung by two sopranos and a countertenor, representing the voices of Saints Catherine, Margaret and Michael” The Independent, 7th July 2012 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Mare Nostrum' (Latin for “Our Sea”) was a Roman name for the Mediterranean Sea, an area that may be regarded as the greatest place of exchange and dialogue in the history of human kind. Of course, music is no exception. In this new lavishly illustrated CD book, Jordi Savall invites us to explore the myth of the Mediterranean Sea as mother of people and cultures, from Morocco to Israel, from Spain to Lebanon. The antique Greek illustration on the front cover underlines how far-reaching - in space and time - this project is. “Like Hesperion's previous CDs, this one is a lovely tissue of local musics...The soloists are remarkable: Gursoy Dincer brings a gentle Turkish lilt, Lior Elmaleh an answering sound from Jerusalem, and Montserrat Figueras accompanies herself on a variety of instruments in songs from all over...her passing represents a loss to the musical world.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 ***** “Savall's collaboration with non-Western musicians receives here perhaps its fullest expression. The quality of the performances is gentle and serious. Even the livelier instrumental numbers are imbued with a sense of innate poise...[Figueras's] voice, delicate yet warm, and wonderfully evocative, is heard to most moving effect.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2012 BBC Music Magazine

The Sublime Porte was the name of the open court of the sultan, led by the Grand Vizier. It got its name from the gate to the headquarters of the Grand Vizier in the Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, where the sultan held greeting ceremonies for foreign ambassadors. It was an ancient Ottoman practice to make the gates of cities and kings' palaces places of assembly. Later the name came to refer to the Empire's position as gateway between Europe and Asia. Following the success of the album 'Istanbul', Jordi Savall crosses new boundaries between Orient and Occident: this time, the vocal traditions of the Ottoman Empire, Armenia and the Jewish Diaspora are masterly resuscitated. Instrumental interludes enable us to enjoy this journey through time and space. In addition to Hespèrion XXI, this album features the elite of Turkish traditional musicians under the inspired direction of Jordi Savall. “This is a typical Alia Vox Hesperion release: sumptuously packaged, richly illustrated, and supported by edifying scholarly notes about the music and its historical context. It's recorded in clear yet atmospheric sound...In addition to the late Montserrat Figueras, there is wonderful singing by the Israeli Lior Elmaleh ad the Turk Gursoy Dincer.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2012 ***** “This superbly researched and recreated ear-opening anthology, crafted with such presence and authority, finds Jordi Savall immersed in the cultural melting-pot of Istanbul...The spectrum of instrumental colour and the three contrasted voices with their glissades of vocal ornamentation are captured in a wonderfully hybrid SACD recording.” Classical Music, 25th February 2012 ***** “The ensemble offers authentic recreations of Turkish, Greek, Armenian and Sephardic pieces, told in textures and timbres of oud, duduk, ney and Savall's own rebab. This is music of great subtlety, technical accomplishment and powerful emotional impact.” The Independent, 18th November 2011 **** “Gursoy Dincer and Lior Elmaleh mix eloquent Israeli and Turkish chanting traditions, while some tracks become a memorial to Savall's wife, the great early-music singer Montserrat Figueras, who died just last month.” The Observer, 4th December 2011 “The death last month of the Catalan soprano Montserrat Figueras adds poignancy to the latest scrupulously researched and beautifully played release from Hespèrion XXI, the early-music group fronted for decades by her and her husband Jordi Savall...Artfully mixing Turkish, Armenian and Jewish songs, and dances, the disc is haunting and educational, with a 250-page booklet (!) of fascinating historical essays included.” The Times, 10th December 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Monteverdi: Arie et Lamenti; Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi
This set gathers 2 albums released in 1990 and 1994. Each of them definitely established Montserrat Figueras as one of the best performers of Claudio Monteverdi’s vocal music. At this time, she developed an innovative style of interpretation, characterised by great fidelity to historical sources, combined with an extraordinary creative and expressive power, that has exerted a decisive influence on the whole historical music movement. Vocal music before 1800 required a new technical and stylistic approach capable of restoring to the beauty and emotion of the voice, that most human of all forms of expression, the necessary balance between singing and declamation, with an emphasis on the poetic and spiritual dimension of the text. She is accompanied by Jordi Savall on CD1 and Ton Koopman on CD2. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Legends & complaints: The Singing of the Birds The Spinning The Son of King The Teacher Count Arnaud Mariagneta Song of the Thief The Will of Amelia Lullabies: Mummy, don’t make me cry Mother of God Reapers: Original Historical Romance National Anthem of Catalonia
This reissue in the Heritage series from 1988 enables us to hear Montserrat Figueras singing the repertoire she embodies like nobody else: traditional Catalan songs. This performance is the natural continuation of her exploration of the great works connected to Catalonia, e.g. the Song of the Sybil or the Red Book of Montserrat (Gregorian manuscript). On this shore of Mediterranean Sea, traditional and ‘classical’ repertoires are connected in a very intimate way. This album is a landmark of in the career of Montserrat Figueras: her innovative style of interpretation, characterised by great fidelity to the historical sources, combined with an extraordinary creative and expressive power, sounds at its best. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Booklet : French, Spanish, English, German, Italian, Catalan When the baroque extravagance crosses oceans... After meeting the musical traditions of the New World, the European Baroque repertoire enriched itself with new colours and rhythms, which make it irresistible. Jordi Savall invites us to an unprecedented instrumental and vocal journey from Spain to Peru to Mexico, playing for the first time with virtuoso Mexican musicians… Get ready ! “the performances have a dash and abandon that are genuinely convincing...The sense of occasion and spontaneity of a live recording is conveyed without artifice.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2010 “Is this early, folk or world music? All three...An exuberant and spontaneous creative energy is sustained throughout, while the presentation is lavish and scholarly.” Sunday Times, 23rd May 2010 **** “The line between early and world music is blurred, the roots of Latin American jazz exposed...the diversity of instrumentation and voices (from Montserrat Figueras and Furio Zanasi to Leopoldo Novoa) lends depth and colour and the rhythms are infectious.” The Independent on Sunday, 20th June 2010 “Here are foot-tapping thrills, secular in spirit even when sacred, strummed by jolly strings, peppered with ethnic percussion, or streaked with the brightly burnished soprano of Montserrat Figueras. Lush documentation as usual with AliaVox, but the best prize of all is the music and musicians’ warmth and humanity.” The Times, 22nd May 2010 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | La Barcha d'Amore1563-1685
La Barcha d'Amore is an eclectic, contrasting selection of some of the most beautiful vocal and instrumental music inspired by mythology and 17th-century European love poetry. Music of time and memory, performed by Montserrat Figueras and Jordi Savall, together with Ton Koopman, Hopkinson Smith,Andrew Lawrence-King and other members of the ensemble Hespèrion XX (which in 2001 became Hespèrion XXI) and the orchestra Le Concert Des Nations, have selected recordings that they made from 1976 to 1996 for the labels Emi Electrola, Dhm,Astrée and Auvidis, and from 1998 to 2008 for Aliavox. This anthology, contains vocal pieces directly related to the theme of love, such as the innovative Airs for the recitar cantando of Giulio Caccini's Le Nuove Musiche, the evocative tonos humanos by Spanish Baroque composers Sebastián Durón, Juan del Vado and Juan Hidalgo, Monteverdi's sublime Lamento della Ninfa, the mysterious folia Yo soy la locura by Henri du Bailly, not forgetting the touching Elizabethan lullaby and the tender melody Une jeune fillette, both by anonymous authors, but equally remarkable for their great beauty and depth of emotion. The various instrumental pieces, with such evocative titles as the Gaillarde "La Barcha del mio Amore" by Giacomo de Gorzanis, Samuel Scheidt's Pavane and his "Courant dolorosa", the Elizabethan "Desperada" and the highly popular improvisation piece, "Greensleeves", as well as the great Jean-Baptiste Lully's Rondeau from Le Mariage forcé and the Chaconne from L'Amour Médecin, provide the necessary complement to the vocal pieces, resulting in a great variety of sources and contrasting characters. The Barcha d'Amore is the personal testimony of Jordi Savall's unwavering and rigorous commitment to the performance of music from the Middle Ages to the age of Classicism using 'historically informed' instruments and performance techniques, which emerged in the 1970s.Those years marked the beginning of a great revival in the performance of pre-Romantic music, a continuing revival which offers the possibility of retrieving an important cultural legacy. “…there's a surprising homogeneity of sound and style throughout - testament to Figueras and Savall's innate musicality, artistic vision and spiritual harmony in a lifetime of collaboration and discovery.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
