Matthias Goerne presents the seventh volume of his hm Schubert survey, which has confirmed him as one of the most gifted exponents of lieder repertoire and programming. Andreas Haefliger joins Matthias in music he has been singing for most of his career. “Sometimes in the more agitated reveries Goerne seems to be musing with himself rather than singing to an audience. However, cloudy intonation usually vanishes when the songs are calm and gentle. The prayerful ecstasy of Im Abendrot is an absolute wonder. Klage, another nature song, isn’t far behind, each word shaped and pitched with the sort of delicacy” The Times, 8th February 2013 **** “This is a most interesting and instructive Schubert recital, performed throughout with tact and great musical intelligence” International Record Review, February 2013 “Goerne’s latest Schubert recital, mostly comprised of little-known songs, is one of the baritone’s most accomplished...German baritone animates [Erlkönig] with a wonderful range of voices and inflections: his timbre has lost none of its wraparound warmth and depth but is equally capable of tenurial lightness.” Financial Times, 15th February 2013 **** “With his dark, nutty baritone and powers of characterisation, he is a near-ideal interpreter of Erlkönig; with the sublime Haefliger as his pianist, he revels in the gentler panoramas, too.” Sunday Times, 24th February 2013 “Though often idiosyncratic, his readings are never less than thoughtful – and his original takes on well-known (and less well-known) songs frequently offer intelligent and bold new insight...Goerne and Haefliger rarely seem to break a sweat, an attitude that can sometimes come over as lack of effort...But their refined style demonstrates its own supreme skill, and there is no shortage of illumination and pleasure to be had” Graham Rogers, bbc.co.uk, 13th February 2013 “His darkly mellow baritone, soft-grained yet with reserves of power, is a perfect instrument for the pantheistic reveries and barcarolles on this new disc...even doubters might have to concede that no singer cares more than Goerne for the beauty and eloquence of Schubert's melodies” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013 “The narrative songs are perhaps the most convincing of all. Erlkönig crackles with excitement: the thrill of the chase rumbles through the piano while Goerne imbues the narrative with passion and intensity, depicting the three characters with admirably individualistic sound colours...It’s a joy that Goerne and Haefliger have given us a recital that shows off so many facets of his artistry in such an admirably skilful way.” MusicWeb International, March 2013 “This is a wonderful recital, in almost all respects. The first thing to grab my attention was the mesmerisinly lovely playing Andreas Haefliger, one of the greatest living pianists...[in Erlkönig] Haefliger's accompaniment is so vivid that I'd enjoy it by itself; Goerne doesn't characterise the three persons as much as many singers, but he still packs a stunning punch...I would rank this among the finest discs I have ever heard.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ***** |

| | | Perspectives 5
Andreas Haefliger’s provocative and trend-setting Perspectives series – juxtaposing the seminal sonatas of Beethoven within the context of works by other composers – reaches its fifth volume with two titans of the piano literature: the groundbreaking Hammerklavier Sonata, and Book One of the Swiss ‘Years of Pilgrimage’ by Franz Liszt, this year widely celebrated on the bicentenary of his birth. Haefliger’s critically and commercially successful Perspectives series mirrors his live recitals, and vivid memories linger in audiences who have heard his numerous performances of these works throughout Europe and the USA. “Haefliger is impressive in the fugue [of the Hammerklavier], but his opening movement is rather careful, stressing strength at the expense of sweep and momentum...The subtlety of Haefliger's tonal palette serves him well in the more intimate pieces in the Swiss volume of Liszt's Annees de pelerinage” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 *** “A few fussy tempo adjustments in the Scherzo [of the Beethoven] can be forgiven in light of Haefliger's linear clarity...Liszt's Swiss journey gest off to a fine start as Haefliger takes trouble to give shape and meaning to Chapelle de Guillaume Tell's tremolos and uses his pedalling mastery to convincingly project the composer's request for vibrato...The final two pieces clock in slower than most pianists, yet are expressive and well sustained.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Perspectives 1
Following his critically acclaimed first release for Avie of Mozart Sonatas (AV 0025), Andreas Haefliger delivers the first in a series of recital recordings that pleases and provokes in equal measure. Perspectives 1 replicates one of Haefliger's recital programmes which he has toured internationally. Underpinned by Haefliger’s hallmark Austro-Germanic repertoire – works by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert – he tantalizing includes Thomas Adès’ austere Darknesse Visible, which the composer describes as “an explosion of John Dowland’s lute song In Darknesse Let Mee Dwell.” “…an attractively planned recital, intelligently and musically played.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2004 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“If there were such a thing as a standard reading of Winterreise, this would be it. In a time when too many singers sound as if they wish they were Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, that is welcome, but there is too little sense of a progression from the mere misery of rejection to the acceptance of utter solitude.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2013 “His expressing of the man's feelings are naturally done by the use of his vocal artistry and his seeming ability to find the right colouring...Throughout the performance Holzmair illuminates with distinctive inflections...So much is to be savoured; one could not help doing so even if one tried. Haefliger too, with his fulgent tone, is a convincing contributor.” International Record Review, May 2013 |

| | | Perspectives 4
Andreas Haefliger’s concept of replicating his recital programmes on record has been a critical and commercial success. The fourth instalment in the Perspectives series juxtaposes Beethoven with works that are inspired and influenced by that composer’s great corpus of piano sonatas. The idiosyncratic Op. 78 and the celebrated Waldstein Sonata, a boundary - breaking work when it was composed in 1804, rub shoulders with Brahms’ early and impulsive Sonata No. 2. The programme provocatively opens with Janácek’s Sonata, “From the Street”, which, in Haefliger’s words “takes you into worlds of tragedy, metaphysical thought, a world of death, of serenity”. This release preserves the vivid memories of Haefliger’s live performance of this repertoire in November 2008 at the Wigmore Hall, which The Sunday Times found by turns “searing and exquisite … immaculately realised” and “masterly”. “…perhaps the most striking playing of all comes in the Brahms where Haefliger delivers an interpretation of formidable granitic strength that nonetheless manages to encapsulate the work's more introspective and poetic aspects.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2009 ***** “The outer movements' ungrateful octaves and fistfuls of chords flow like oil, while Heafliger's nuanced, cultivated touch brings a three-dimensional quality to the slow movement's sad lyricism, to say nothing of his focused, rhythmic control in the Scherzo...[an] assured and committed performance.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Mozart: Piano Sonatas

| | | Perspectives 3
Of his Perspectives series of recordings for AVIE, Andreas Haefliger says, “In creative programming, I have always seen an opportunity for illuminating the individuality of works by placing them in tonal, dramatic and historic relief. Thus, through the sequence of a recital program, repertoire that has long been familiar to us is put into a new perspective. This series is a document of my concert activity and aims at bringing the recital experience to the living room.” This recital offers the perspective of a great Schubert Sonata that despite its originality also shows its indebtedness to Beethoven. The two popular Beethoven Sonatas have features that resonated deeply with Schubert, who adored the older composer and persistently used his works as models. Previous releases in this series Perspectives 1 (AV 0041) which contrasts Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert with Thomas Adès, and Perspectives 2 (AV 2082) which juxtaposes Beethoven, Brahms and Bartók. 2 CDs for price of 1 “Jaefliger's innate affinity for Beethoven's largely lyrical Op 28 Sonata manifests itself via the pianist's relaxed tempi and ample tone. ” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 “The idea of recording for CD piano-recital programmes designed for the concert hall is a good one, provided that the programmes make musical sense and that the spontaneity of live performance can be preserved. On both counts, Haefliger succeeds” Sunday Times | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Marina Piccinini & Andreas Haefliger in Recital
Andreas Haefliger has produced two provocative and acclaimed mixed recital recordings for Avie in his series called Perspectives, juxtaposing standard repertoire with newer works and recreating his recital programs for posterity. On this new disc he is joined by his wife, leading American flautist Marina Piccinini, for an equally stimulating selection that is a pure partnership of equals. Each takes a solo turn – Piccinini with Debussy’s Syrinx and Haefliger with the Liszt arrangement of Wagner’s Liebestod – and they come together for two titans of the flute repertory, the Sonatas of Franck and Prokofiev. To quote MusicWeb, “Programming in this way is in itself an art,” and with such polished performances a recording with obvious appeal. “At the radiantly lovely opening of the Prokofiev Sonata one realises that Marine Piccinini's flute-playing is very special, her lyrical phrasing cool, exquisitely shaped and with an underlying delicate sensuality. …with Andreas Haefliger a highly sympathetic partner, this outstanding performance establishes the writing as perfect for the flute, even with one's memories of the Second Violin Sonata, which the work subsequently became at the behest of David Oistrakh. Similarly, the opening of the Franck Sonata is instantly beguiling, with flute and piano echoing each other engagingly at the opening and in the dreamy Andante.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2006 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

“In creative programming, I have always seen an opportunity for illuminating the individuality of works by placing them in tonal, dramatic and historic relief. Thus, through the sequence of a recital program, repertoire that has long been familiar to us is put into a new perspective. This series of Perspective CDs is a document of my concert activity and aims at bringing the recital experience to the living room.” Those are the words of pianist Andreas Haefliger whose second release in his Perspectives series juxtaposes sonatas of Beethoven and Brahms with Bartók’s suite Out of Doors. It’s a refreshing approach in an industry all too eager to pigeon hole performers and emphasise single-composer CDs. The results are, according to The Guardian, “thoroughly enjoyable and thoughtfully planned.” Haefliger is recognised internationally for his ability to perform the great Classical and Romantic and works with a rare combination of power, elegance, and poetry. His interpretations spring from a rich musical culture and have earned him the status of one of the leading pianists of our time. (2 CDs for the price of 1) “Particularly impressive is the Brahms F minor Sonata. Its main slow movement, inspired by a poem describing a moonlit love scene, is quite beautifully played, and the finale has all the verve and energy it needs.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2006 **** “…'Perspectives 2' reflects Haefliger's thoughtfulness in programme-building, as well as his musicianship and selfless virtuosity.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2006 “a stimulating piece of programming full of exhilarating playing.” Pianist Magazine | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
