Knudåge Riisager was a pioneer of the Neo-Classical style in Danish music. This re-release of the previously acclaimed CD on Dacapo (no longer available), has been given a new lease of life in outstanding SACD sound quality.

Lively and inventive, the music on this disc spans the years 1933-1940 and shows Riisager both as a composer inspired by the Neo-Baroque and as an exponent of a decidedly Danish sound.

Trumpet Concerto in D

“This is probably the finest single collection of trumpet concertos in the catalogue. When it first appeared in 1987 (the Hummel and Haydn have since been recoupled with a later set as listed here) it created overnight a new star in the firmament of trumpeters.
The two finest concertos for the trumpet are undoubtedly those of Haydn and Hummel, and Hardenberger plays them here with a combination of sparkling bravura and stylish elegance that are altogether irresistible. Hardenberger opens with the famous Hummel Concerto, played in E major rather than the usual E flat, which makes the work sound bolder and brighter than usual. The finale with its crisp articulation, fantastic tonguing and tight trills, displays a genial easy bravura, yet overflows with energy and high spirits. Marriner and his Academy accompany with characteristic finesse and warmth, with the lilting dotted rhythms of the first movement of the Hummel, seductively jaunty. The lovely Andante of the Haydn is no less beguiling, and both finales display a highspirited exuberance and an easy bravura which make the listener smile with pleasure.
The recording gives him the most vivid realism and presence, but it's a pity that the orchestral backcloth is so reverberant; otherwise the sound is very natural. A superb disc.”

Sonatina for solo trumpet

Sonatina for Trumpet & Piano, H. 357

Håkan Hardenberger is regarded as the greatest trumpet soloist today. An outstanding teacher he is a professor at the Malmö Conservatoire and a Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

In this masterclass Håkan Hardenberger works with students on three key works from the 20th century trumpet repertoire

“Håken Hardenberger couldn't be further from a museum in his lessons on three major 20th-century trumpet works. Contrasts are rewarding and used in a cunningly structured way to cultivate respectively centred intonation, rhythmic precision, and potent storytelling. In a generous two-and-a-quarter hours, the pursuit of that conquest is unfailing interesting. A series highlight.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2009 ****

3 MOB Pieces

Version for trumpet & chamber orchestra

Busking for trumpet, accordion, banjo and string orchestra

Mats Bergström (banjo) & Claudia Buder (accordion)

Schwertsik:

Divertimento Macchiato, Op. 99 per tromba et orchestra

Håkan Hardenberger returns to BIS with a disc of works written especially for him by HK Gruber and Kurt Schwertsik.

The Three MOB Pieces, composed in 1968, take inspiration from a diverse cross-section of music, including the neo-classicism of Stravinsky, the Beatles and the cabaret music by Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill.

In each of the three movements of Busking the soloist plays a trumpet in a different key, with the accompaniment of an accordion, a banjo and strings.

Schwertsik’s title for his Divertimento is deceptive as he adds both melancholy and defiance to a work that appears, on the face of it, to offer easy-on-the-ear entertainment.

“The disc's centrepiece is HK Gruber's trumpet concerto Busking...The most involving passages, to my ear, are those in which banjo and accordion cut loose from their idiomatic moorings, joining the trumpet in freer interplay...The other works on the disc are more occasional in tone and cast in a neo-tonal vein in which faux naif irony is rarely absent.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012

Håkan Hardenberger has earned a reputation of breaking new ground for the trumpet, commissioning works from the world’s foremost composers.

On this disc, he shows a different side to himself in arrangements of his favourite songs and film themes.

Hardenberger is joined by his long-standing collaborators: the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the pianist Roland Pöntinen, who also has orchestrated several of the arrangements.

“Hardenberger is often rhythmically too straitlaced for this material. Still, we can admire his smoky flugelhorn tone and deft high passagework on muted trumpet. And the selection, from My Funny Valentine to The Godfather theme, is enjoyable schmaltz.” The Times, 10th March 2012 ***

JS Bach: Brandenburg Concertos & Triple Concertos

JS Bach: Brandenburg Concertos & Triple Concertos

Bach, J S:

Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 1-6 BWV1046-1051 (complete)

Simon Preston (harpsichord)

Concerto for Three Violins in C major, BWV1064

Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV1067

Concerto for Flute, Violin & Harpsichord in A minor, BWV1044

Maurice Bourgue (oboe), Hakan Hardenberger (trumpet), Irena Grafenauer (flute), Simon Presto (harpsichord)

CPE Bach Chamber Orchestra, Peter Schreier

The Brandenburg Concertos are an encyclopedia of Baroque concerto manners; consciously styled as so, naturally, by the completist Bach, determined to prove his excellence in all areas of contemporary musical achievement (bar opera). Instrumental colours are whirled in kaleidoscopic combinations, from the extrovert trio of hunting horns in the First to the intimate string consort including violas da gamba in the Sixth.

The expressive characters of each concerto are no less varied, from the trumpet-led high spirits of the Second to the rather more ambitious, even proto-Romantic sensibility of the Fifth with its gigantic cadenza for the keyboard capping the first movement.

Bach clearly aimed to show his mettle to the Margrave of Brandenburg when he sent him a richly ornamented copy of these concertos; no doubt to prove his versatility at a court wealthier and more glamorous than the comparative outpost of Weimar where Bach was retained as Kapellmeister. Much good this putative job application did him: Bach never even received an acknowledgement.

These sprightly, rhythmically driven modern performances are soaked in Leipzig’s long Bach tradition. The great tenor and conductor Peter Schreier was himself a chorister in Bach’s Thomaskirche, and the CPE Bach Chamber Orchestra is his handpicked group of instrumentalists. They are joined by a distinguished array of soloists as required, including the flautist Irena Grafenauer, oboist Maurice Bourgue, and no less than Simon Preston as the harpsichord soloist in the Fifth Brandenburg.

“Simon Preston gives an admirably lucid account of the harpsichord solo in the opening movement of the Fifth Concerto… Both (Triple) concertos receive animated performances and there is plenty to enjoy in the solo playing.” Gramophone Magazine, April 1994
