Schumann: Piano Quintet & Piano Quartet

Schumann: Piano Quintet & Piano Quartet

Schumann:

Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44

Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 47

Stéphane De May (piano), Philippe Koch (violin), Damien Pardoen (violin), Pierre-Henri Xuereb (viola), Luc Tooten (cello)

The Piano Quintet Op. 44 and the Piano Quartet Op. 47 date from the very fertile period of the autumn of 1842 in the wake of the three string quartets op. 41. No doubt of a more academic character the quartets, the Piano Quintet is also more moving and more accomplished, better groomed in its quasi concertante form, which subtly links the rigour of the quartet with the freedom of expression and the fantasy of the pianistic composition, aptly characteristic of Schumann. The Piano Quartet uses the same splendid tonality of E flat major.

In only a few months’ time, the composer thus produces more than half of his outstanding output of chamber music, as if he had kept for a long time within himself his inspiration of the chamber music player, which all of a sudden bursts forth in a brilliant posy.

Quatuor Louvigny

Jean Huré (1877-1930), virtuoso pianist and organist and a prolific composer who won acclaim in all genres. The worthy heir to Franck and Debussy, this showcase release provides a world premiere recording of the Sonata for violin & piano. This disc is also the occasion to welcome a newcomer to the Timpani label – Marie-Josèphe Jude. A pupil of Aldo Ciccolini and finalist at the prestigious Clara Haskil Competition, this first release is testament to her commitment to rare scores and superb playing.

“...the passionate performance [of the Violin Sonata] from Philippe Koch and Marie-Josèphe Jude does it proud...The half-hour Piano Quintet is...ardent and pastoral in equal measure, with a sort of modal rusticity and bucolic langour that lend the music individuality.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010

In 1994, Ricercar released a boxed set bringing together nearly all the works of Guillaume Lekeu (1870-1894), the prodigious Belgian composer who died prematurely at the age of 24.

Admirer of Beethoven and Wagner, disciple of Franck, and protégé of Ysaÿe, Lekeu had, in his last compositions, opened a new way that was neither French nor Germanic. It is to this journey that this new edition invites you, starting with the earliest works, written at 15, to the masterpieces of 1893. On this occasion, Jérôme Lejeune has completely revised and expanded the introductory text, which proposes a chronological analysis of the works.

Listening to the compositions in this order helps to understand the way the composer’s talent developed, and the quotations from his abundant correspondence give an even better idea of the state of mind of this fascinating, highly moving young man who had put this simple phrase as an epigraph to his Adagio for quartet and string orchestra: ‘The pale flowers of memory...’
