At one of her rare appearances with orchestra, Martha Argerich, the grande dame of the piano, joined forces with world-famous cellist Mischa Maisky and the fabulous Lucerne Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin – “Romantic Offering”, a double concerto for piano, cello and orchestra dedicated to its very first soloists. “I’ve attempted to depict and highlight the most distinctive individual qualities of these two musicians … Romantic Offering should inspire new thoughts and experiences. Music isn’t only the product of experiment. It should move your soul and touch your heart.” Rodion Shchedrin The programme was rounded off by late-Romantic masterpieces by César Franck, Antonín Dvořák and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony under the baton of renowned maestro Neeme Järvi. Argerich is superb in every nuance.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2011 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

The Verbier Festival, created in 1994, rapidly acquired a reputation for artistic excellence and is now considered to be among the major European music festivals. During a fortnight each July, the greatest stars of the classical music world come together against the magical backdrop of the Swiss Alps. The Verbier Festival gives musicians the opportunity to perform original programmes with fellow musicians they admire, but with whom they may never have performed before. These world première performances produce innovative and exciting results, as much for artists as for audiences. Through the Academy, the Verbier Festival invests in the talents of young artists, while creating, and promoting excellence in the performing arts. “Whatever the reason, Verbier attracts great artists and inspires them to new heights, helped by the canny casting of the festival founder and artistic director Martin Engstroem. Martha Argerich… is absolutely astounding in the finale of Bartók's Sonata for Violin and Piano No 1 with a demonically driven Renaud Capuçon. ...Nelson Freire, offers a tender, one might say avuncular, view of Debussy's Children's Corner, a contrast to the glacial Hélène Grimaud in Schumann and Ravel, and Evgeny Kissin's Liebesträume No 3 where love is clearly a cross to be borne (though his Bizet-Horowitz Variations justifiably raise the roof). Rounding off proceedings is a fired-up Joshua Bell in the finale of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Visually, the camerawork is efficient and nothing more.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | The Dvorák Cycle - Volume IV
Mischa Maisky is one of the world’s leading cellists. He supplies evidence in his fantastic performance of Dvorák’s famous Cello Concerto, which is included in the fourth part of the Dvorák Cycle. After 1975, Maisky established an international reputation, touring the USA, Europe, Australia and the Far East. In 1977 he played for the first time in London with pianist Radu Lupu. Subsequent years of work in the recording studio and on the concert podium made Maisky one of the most important cellists of his generation. Ever since its first performance in 1893 in New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Ninth Symphony has taken its place among the greatest works of European romanticism. The public response to the work was so overwhelming that the Czech composer became the most popular man in New York overnight. One can only agree with Václav Neumann: “Yes, this is the most magnificent symphony in the repertoire of Czech music.” Recording Date: 1993
Place of recording: Live from the Alte Oper Frankfurt
Running Time: 89 min

| | | Haydn - Cello Concertos Nos. 1 & 2
Directed by Brian Large. Produced at Hetzendorf Castle, Vienna “Maisky and his players perform the Haydn with warm, polished energy. His Schumann, with a fairly restrained Bernstein, sometimes overdoes the languishing, but it's beautiful playing, and visually compelling.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 **** “What a joy, as Maisky's performance of Haydn's C major Cello Concerto opens in the beautiful concert room of the Schloss Hetzendorf in Vienna, to hear the rich-timbred soloist and the lovely sounds of the Vienna strings” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |
