British baritone Christopher Maltman was born in 1970 and read biochemistry at the University of Warwick before training as a singer at the Royal Academy of Music; in 1997 he won the Lieder Prize at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, and made his Covent Garden debut (as Ned Keene in Britten’s Peter Grimes) the same year. His muscular voice and physique have earned him particular acclaim in roles such as Britten’s Billy Budd and Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia and Mozart’s Don Giovanni (he sings the latter on DVD/Blu-ray in Claus Guth’s controversial Lars von Trier-inspired production from the Salzburg Festival, and in Kasper Holten’s film Juan, released in 2010).
