Setting a charming text by Colette, Ravel’s richly-scored opera L’Enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Spells) is a lyric fantasy whose cast includes fairy tale characters, crockery, plants and little animals which come to life to chastise the child who has been tormenting them. However, all ends happily when the child learns compassion. Ravel’s life-long fascination with the exotic orient found inspiration in three poems by Tristan Klingsor, brought together in his ravishing and enduringly popular song cycle Shéhérazade. “Ravel brilliantly balances raucous humour with heartfelt tenderness, and any production or recording needs to be able to convey both his caricatures and the sublime. This engaging account from Nashville successfully negotiates this balancing act. Julie Boulianne's child has wide-eyed wonder... She can be heard in grown-up, and decidedly seductive mode in the accompanying Shéhérazade.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2009 **** | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Fern Hill is a blithe poem, yet touched by darkness; time finally holds the poet “green and dying” …Poem in October begins in Thomas’s seafront town: the poet, marking his birthday, climbs to a high hill, wherehe reflects on his youth and mulls his future … Poem on his Birthday distorts the “lamb-white days”of Fern Hill to the grotesqueries of “herons who walk in their shroud”: Poem in October’s sparkling ocean becomes a gull-haunted river Styx … Author’s Prologue – his penultimate work – was a lavish, exultant poem that bellowed with lust and life. It called for music as unusual as it was buoyant. And it offered A Dylan Thomas Trilogy the formal inevitability I always dreamed for it …" John Corigliano “Corigliano could have made a comfortable living churning out film scores: his versatility, orchestral wizardry and fluency are undeniable.” BBC Music Magazine “The Allen baritone is in full, eloquent form, with a ring of mature authority and faultless diction” The Financial Times “Slatkin and his Nashville forces are persuasive advocates, and Sir Thomas Allen contributes a harrowing performance…” BBC Music Magazine, December 2008 **** | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Piazzolla: Sinfonía Buenos Aires
Astor Piazzolla’s name has become synonymous with tango, the signature dance of his native country, Argentina. In the Sinfonía Buenos Aires, Piazzolla’s development of symphonic tango is notable for brilliant, original and often complex orchestration. His Bandoneón Concerto, nicknamed ‘Aconcagua’ after the highest Andean mountain, provides the soloist with ample opportunities for drama, pathos and virtuosity. Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires), a series of single tango movements with several references to Vivaldi’s famous work, is a vivid sequence in which the changing moods of the seasons are expressed by means of an almost limitless emotional range and depth. “The opening work on this disc provides a rare glimpse into the musical world of the young Piazzolla: the Sinfonia Buenos Aires, from 1951, was the last in a series of orchestral pieces that had followed his years of study with Alberto Ginastera in the Argentine capital.” The Guardian, 23rd September 2010 ** “The arrangement played on this new recording...accentuates Piazzolla's admiration for Vivaldi more than most: classical-style scoring notably devolves into Concerto Grosso textures in Spring as instruments peel away in solo excursions...they show Piazzolla a musical communicator of Vivaldian originality and individuality, who like his predecessor pushed instruments to their limits” Classic FM Magazine, February 2011 ***** | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
