| | | Koussevitsky conducts the New York Philharmonic-Symphony-Orchestra
The long-time dictator of the Boston Symphony appeared at Carnegie hall in early 1942 in a series of historic concerts that breathed new life into the moribund New York Philharmonic. TIME Magazine had nicknamed them “The Dead End Kids”, and Koussevitzky had just two weeks to whip this recalcitrant band of notorious musical delinquents into shape: quite a few of the younger members had been called up for military service and were replaced by new players. This new release documents this difficult period in the New York Phil’s history. “Despite any sonic limitations I promise you the performances transcend them. This is an important set which gives us some vivid examples of great conducting in action.” MusicWeb International, 15th May 2013 |

| | | Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique & Nuits d'été
In 1831 Berlioz extended modern orchestral art with this 'Symphonie Fantastique' which served as a programme model for Mahler and Wagner and later for Debussy's 'La Mer'. Of the 118 recordings since 1930 the models which inspire most are still those of Pierre Monteux and Charles Munch (pace Jean Roy). The American soprano Eleonor Steber recorded 'Nuits d'été' in 1953 with the blazing support of Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic, the most possessed and convincing version of this masterpiece ever played. 1953 Columbia US [Op. 7], October 1958 [Op. 14] “Steber’s 1953 Nuits d’été remains the finest account on disc. No other singer, not even Crespin, equals her for beauty of tone and phrasing, seamless legato and interpretative insight...Monteux’s Fantastique is, as one would expect from this great French Berliozian, well worth reissuing. But please, Praga, give us Steber complete.” Sunday Times, 10th February 2013 |

| | | Nielsen: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3
This is the first volume in the New York Philharmonic's new Nielsen Project. With this new series of recordings, Nielsen crosses the Atlantic as the New York Philharmonic and their Music Director Alan Gilbert shed new light on the composer's uniquely Nordic symphonic sound. All works are recorded live during the New York Philharmonic's concert series in Avery Fisher Hall which has already impressed critics and audiences alike. In this interpretation, Maestro Gilbert's personal passion for the music of Carl Nielsen shines through every note, and the series will shed exciting new light on the indomitable Danish symphonist, leading up to the celebrations of his 150th birthday in 2015. “Counterpoints that grind rather than dance, the weight and depth of the New York Phil’s sound and Gilbert’s ear for Nielsen’s symphonic mapping really make these recordings. These are rich and hugely enjoyable performances that add to the undernourished interpretative debate around Nielsen like few others have.” bbc.co.uk, 25th September 2012 “these performances are both stunners, good enough to make you regret that the applause has been edited out of both live recordings...These two symphonies are glorious. They will enrich your life. The playing and recording are faultless. Unmissable, in other words.” The Arts Desk, 20th October 2012 “There is absolutely no doubting Gilbert's affection for this music. But while it would be an exaggeration to say that he kills the thing he loves, he does occasionally spoil it with sugary treats.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012 “Gilbert proves capable of embracing and reconciling all the contradictory elements of Nielsen's musical personality: a warm heart and pent-up aggression, tenderness and playfulness, elegance and rowdiness. The playing is incisive and confident, and helped by a handsome recording” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 ***** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
