| | | Poul Rovsing Olsen: Piano Concerto and Orchestral Works
The Danish composer Poul Rovsing Olsen’s background was in the Danish-French tradition, and his works are typified by clear-cut rhythms, expressive melody lines and colourful tonal effects. This world première recording of his dazzling Concerto pour Piano et Orchestre together with his two major orchestral works Variations Symphoniques and Au Fond de la Nuit features pianist Christina Bjørkøe accompanied by the Odense Symphony Orchestra and conductor Bo Holten. “It is played with aplomb and audible relish, as are the couplings, by the Odense Symphony Orchestra, by the Odense Symphony Orchestra, superbly marshalled by Bo Holten. Dacapo's sound is excellent and the disc is a fine introduction to this composer.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2013 “Christina Bjørkøe is well-known for her recordings of Danish piano and chamber music. She handles the wide changes of tempo and mood in the Piano Concerto with great aplomb and subtlety...this disc will serve as a useful introduction to the composer’s works.” MusicWeb International, March 2013 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | The Music of Poul Ruders, Volume 8
This disc presents the premiere recordings of two major Poul Ruders orchestral scores. Offred Suite is a suite of the five major arias from Ruders's greatest international success, the opera, The Handmaid's Tale. Ruders has structured the music in Offred Suite to flow continuously, so that the overall effect is that of a monodrama. Singing the role of Offred is the brilliant young soprano of Metropolitan Opera fame, Susanna Phillips. Ruders's Symphony No. 3 'Dream Catcher' is a 30-minute long work in two interconnected movements. After a stormy introduction, the music dissolves into the main movement. This dreamlike movement connects to a Scherzo prestissimo, a movement which annotator Malcolm MacDonald describes as: “a tour-de-force of virtuoso orchestral writing, a teeming, yelping, squealing, buzzing, chittering, whooping riot of sound.” The performances by the Odense Symphony under conductor Scott Yoo are nothing short of spectacular. Volume Six of Bridge's Ruders series (BRIDGE 9336) was Grammy-nominated, received an Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and was a finalist in the contemporary category at the 2011 Gramophone Awards. Volume Seven (BRIDGE9375) has just been chosen as Editor's Choice in the April 20120 issue of Gramophone and was awarded an IRR Outstanding in IRR’s March issue. “a fine continuation of Bridge's invaluable Ruders series” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012 “Tundra brilliantly reimagines the bleak, rarefied but brutal orchestral style of the Finn, insinuating what might be fleeting (certainly telling) quotations; while the two-movement symphony is pure Ruders...the whole work seeming a single virtuoso flourish.” Sunday Times, 19th August 2012 “the Offred Suite of extracts reminds just how pungent and eloquent Ruders's score is, with Susanna Phillips the chillingly accurate soprano. Ruders deals in exciting, dramatic gestures and though the harmonic direction may sometimes be unclear, the music sweeps us powerfully along.” The Observer, 9th September 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Mozart: Piano Concertos Volume 3
The third volume of Vassily Primakov’s much acclaimed Mozart Piano Concerto series features two of Mozart's greatest concertos. Scored for a small orchestra without clarinets, trumpets, or drums, the Piano Concerto No. 17 in G major, K. 453 is one of Mozart’s most graceful concertos, typically mingling a sense of gaiety with melancholic undertones. Urbane and aristocratic in character, the Piano Concerto No. 22 in E flat, K 482 gains a warm of sound from the orchestra’s inclusion of clarinets instead of oboes – the first time Mozart had done so in a concerto. Vassily Primakov plays Mozart’s own cadenzas in K. 453 and those of Camille Saint-Saëns in K. 482. “Of course he...offers numerous tender, introspective touches, but, in any case, not since Murray Perahia's Sony recording have I heard the piano part in this movement sound more interesting and alive. I also like the smugly cheerful tone Primakov adopts in the finale.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2012 **** “Primakov's approach is very clean and well articulated, though the instrument itself isn't particularly alluring...In the outer movements of K482, Primakov's tempi sound absolutely natural, particularly in the finale, which he imbues with a quiet glee.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2012 “Primakov is a scrupulous pianist...The orchestral playing is also of a very high standard, and forms a genuine partnership with the soloist. The recording is at a high volume level and has a realistic balance between the piano and orchestra. This is natural and compelling choice for those who like their Mozart at the delicate and precise end of the spectrum.” MusicWeb International, August 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | The Music of Poul Ruders, Volume 7World Première Recordings
This disc presents Poul Ruders’s latest orchestral composition, a 31 minute “Organ Symphony” in four movements, featuring a superbly wrought organ part played by Danish virtuoso, Flemming Dreisig. The brilliantly orchestrated Symphony No. 4 is perhaps Ruders's most extroverted work to date. Ruders composed his Trio Transcendentale as the set piece for the Carl Nielsen International Organ Competition, and it is recorded here by the winner of the 2011 ‘Ruders Prize’, the British organist Nicholas Wearne. Songs and Rhapsodies is a 25 minute suite, written for the Danish accordionist Frode Andersen and the woodwind quintet of Athelas, Denmark’s foremost new music ensemble. Poul Ruders, Vol. 7 is the follow-up to last year's Vol. 6 (BRIDGE9336), which was a finalist in the Contemporary category at the 2011 Gramophone Awards. “Ruders is equal to the competition, his invention characteristically sizzling. He does not obtrude the soloist, but delights in blending organ tone with related textures so one can’t always tell the difference...Trio Transcendentale, for organ alone (Nicholas Wearne), is fast and fun.” Sunday Times, 22nd January 2012 “This is, not to mince any words, a marvellous CD...the sheer craftsmanship of Ruders's writing is a joy in its own right...[Trio Transcendentale] must be terrific in live performance - it's already terrific here...[Songs and Rhapsodies] is a score of constant variety...The recordings are fresh and immediate.” International Record Review, March 2012 “His ace in the hole is his wonderful and inventive orchestration techniques. By creating odd or unusual instrument combinations, he often discovers new and vibrant orchestral colors...For those of you looking to expand your musical horizons as well as your CD collection, this captivating series of recordings by Bridge Records, which casts a wide net over the music of Poul Ruders, deserves some real estate on your shelves.” Classical Music Sentinel, March 2012 “Trio transcendentale was a test-piece for the 2011 International Carl Nielsen Organ Competition, at which Nicholas Wearne gave what was judged (surely deservedly) the winning interpretation...[Songs and Rhapsodies] explores the relationship between diverse timbres with energy, imagination and inventiveness...I do not expect to come across another disc of contemporary music as richly rewarding as this one in a hurry.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2012 “The organ Symphony ranges from rapt contemplation to searing power. The Trio Transcendentale is attractive, the Songs and Rhapsodies are striking.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2012 ***** “The solo organ work Trio transcendentale is a trio like no other...Nicholas Wearne - winner of the Ruders Prize at the 2011 Carl Nielsen International Music Competition - handles its fearsome challenges impressively.” Choir & Organ, May/June 2012 *** “the Odense Symphony Orchestra is in scintillating form...But it is Dreisig who really earns his fee in the final tumultuous pages of this surprisingly approachable, highly memorable work, as Ruders lets rip with a saturnalia to blow the church roof off...[Wearne] performs [Trio Transcendentale] here with aplomb.” MusicWeb International, July 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Machover:...but not simpler…Music of Tod Machover, Vol. 5
This collection of Tod Machover's music focuses on chamber and orchestral music composed during the last decade, both with and without electronic enhancement. Machover's music is a fascinating blend of expressive and lyrical melody combined with a sophisticated ear for textural complexity. The resulting music is always a treat for the ears - colourful, vibrant, and rhythmically propulsive. The largest composition on this disc is the piano concerto Jeux Deux, scored for large orchestra (the work was commissioned and first performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra), with the soloist performing on a “hyperpiano”- a concert grand piano which interacts with sensors and computer programs in order to expand its technical possibilities. “Machover's own music seems to have become more and more soft-centred. The pieces on this disc all date from the last decade – one of them, Jeux Deux, is a work for hyperpiano and orchestra, while Sparkler layers real-time electronic treatments on to the live orchestral sound. It's all slickly done, and some of the results are pretty enough” The Guardian, 2nd February 2012 ** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
