Güher and Süher Pekinel is the exceptional Turkish twin piano duo that has gained international success over the past 40 years. Starting as prodigies in their early childhood, they had their first public performance at the age of six. Their career brought them from Turkey over to France, Germany, Japan, the US, Great Britain and many more.

Güher and Süher Pekinel are known for playing the piano backto-back, only relying on sound. Their ability is often described as a telepathic gift which offers the listener a perfectly balanced sound. This internationally often adored style of piano playing gives each performance an engrossed tension and makes it a unique musical experience.

This DVD comprises the remarkable live concerts from London, Lucerne and Zurich which are conducted by the brilliant Sir Colin Davis and famous Chinese conductor Muhai Tang. Both belong to the greatest maestri of our time and bring these Pekinel concerts to a musical highlight. Together with the special bonus that shows an interview of the sisters in London, 2009 this DVD is a sublime document of amazing Güher & Süher Pekinel.

Güher & Süher Pekinel: Bach & Jazz

Güher & Süher Pekinel: Bach & Jazz

Live Recordings from The Schwetzingen Festival, Cadogan Hall London, Lucerne Piano Festival, 2001-2007

Güher and Süher Pekinel are recognized worldwide as a Duo of most exceptional artistry and magnetism. Their performances in recital and with leading orchestras are considered to demonstrate extraordinary musicality, keyboard command and unanimity of style and execution. Worldwide they are the only Duo playing without any eye contact in order to concentrate on their respective “breath of musical momentum”. Born as twins in Istanbul, the Pekinels fi rst appeared in public at the age of six and three years later made their orchestral debut with the Ankara Philharmonic, broadcast live throughout Turkey. Beginning their studies at Conservatoire de Paris, the Pekinels later studied with piano legends like Rudolf Serkin, Claudio Arrau and Mieczyslaw Horszowski at the Curtis Institute and Juillard School in New York. They were introduced to the Salzburg Festival audience by Herbert von Karajan at his invitation in 1984, and who worked with them on a number of subsequent occasions.

Including the documentary DOUBLE LIFE: Portrait about the musical lives of Güher and Süher Pekinel.

“... The Pekinels are widely regarded as the fi nest duo-pianist team since Arthur and Karl-Ulrich Schnabel.” The Pianist Magazine

“…Everything was out of the ordinary! The twin pianists Güher and Süher Pekinel play the Bach Double Concerto in C minor as one used to hear it in the good old days of Karajan. Romantically structured with powerful colours. The refinement of their touch brings their interpretation into an ascending virtuosic whirlwind. The harmony between the two pianos and the Orchestra was astonishing.” (Kronenzeitung)

Violin Concerto in D

Bonus CD. recorded in 1935

Samuel Dushkin (violin)

Lamoureux Concert Orchestra, Igor Stravinsky

This 20 CD set celebrates the 100th anniversary of the premiere of Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring in Paris on 29 May 1913. It is widely regarded as the most significant event in 20th century classical music and the shock of this revolutionary score can still be felt today.

Included in this collection are all 38 recordings of this LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS from the catalogues of Decca, Deutsche Grammophon and Philips (from Eduard van Beinum in 1946 to Gustavo Dudamel in 2010) – an extraordinary initiative, which is likely to gain significant press coverage for the 100th Anniversary of this masterpiece.

In addition to the six recordings included in the 4 CD set, are classic performances by Abbado, Ansermet, Bernstein, Dutoit, Haitink, Karajan, Ozawa, Rattle, Solti etc. The set also includes three recordings of the composer’s arrangement for piano duet.

Also included, as a bonus, is an historical 1935 recording from the archives of Deutsche Grammophon of Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto, conducted by the composer himself, with Samuel Dushkin as the soloist, who gave the premiere performance of the work.

“Monteux conducted the first performances in Paris, and his 1956 version with a hard-pressed Paris Conservatoire Orchestra is compelling. These players sound as if they’re traversing a precipice, and there are several moments where you fear the worst. But the effect is raw, invigorating and pungent, helped by astringent wind sonorities. Only Valery Gergiev’s superbly theatrical Kirov account from 1999 runs it close.” The Arts Desk, 2nd February 2013
