Dame Margaret Price

Soprano

Dame Margaret Price

Margaret Price was born in Blackwood, Wales, in 1941: her original ambition was to become a biology teacher, and her decision to switch to a career in music was primarily fuelled by a desire to sing lieder rather than opera. Initially training as a mezzo, Price's big break came in 1963 when she stepped in for an ailing Teresa Berganza as Cherubino at Covent Garden: she is still remembered primarily as a Mozart (and Verdi) singer, though shortly after this auspicious Royal Opera debut she transitioned to the lyric soprano repertoire, numbering Donna Anna, Fiordiligi, Pamina and Konstanze among her signature-roles. Later in her career (which was largely based in Germany) she became an acclaimed Verdian, winning particular praise as Amelia Boccanegra, Aida, Elisabetta and in particular Desdemona (she remains the definitive interpreter of this role for many to this day). Limiting herself to a handful of roles which suited her statuesque physique and golden, soaring sound, she never ventured into Wagnerian repertoire on stage but was persuaded to sing Isolde on record for Kleiber: the disc is now widely considered to be one of the finest recordings of the work, as well as the crowning glory of Price's career. Price was awarded a CBE in 1982 and was made a Dame in 1993; she died at home in Ceibwr Bay on 28th January 2011.

“It has [Solti's] particular flair for seizing upon the tensions of each scene and emphasizing them...Cossutta is a no-nonsense Otello. He sings the role as well if not better than anyone since del Monaco...[Price] is even more precise and sensitive in her singing...what a joy to hear the music done with such consistently clear, fresh and full tone....[Bacquier's] touch with the text—examples proliferate— constantly has one marvelling again at the wonderful marriage of Boito's words and Verdi's music.” Gramophone Magazine, September 1978

“Under Solti's baton, this Otello is too fast and furious but Price is one of the finest Desdemonas on CD.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2012 ***

When Dame Margaret Price died in January 2011, the musical world reacted in an understandably emotional fashion. By contrast, the Welsh soprano herself was a woman with an understated approach to her life, eschewing the frenetic international star system in favour of loyalty to a select few major opera houses. She bade farewell to public performance in 1999, retiring to rural Wales where she turned to breeding golden retrievers. Although a local vicar persuaded her to perform in a charity concert, she found the occasion so nerve-wracking that her dogs finally became the only audience for her singing.

These first releases of Margaret Price with the Münchner Rundfunkorchester cover a time period from 1977 to 1991. Her work was largely concentrated on Mozart and Verdi, to which this CD pays ample credit, and also features arias by Bellini, Cilea, Rossini and Weber. Mozartian clarity, a consistently effortless vocal production, histrionic fire and a healthy grounding – these attributes made Margaret Price an internationally revered opera star, especially by Munich audiences. Her relationship with the Bavarian State Opera was so close that Margaret Price settled in Munich for 18 years, not returning to her native Wales until the end of her career.

Previously unreleased live recordings from the “Sunday Concerts”.

Singer portrait featuring Margaret Price’s core repertoire, including famous arias from Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, Aida, Otello and Norma.
