Wonderful performances of Schubert and Beethoven by one of the most highly regarded pianists of the 20th century. The Schubert minatures were recorded at the legendary Sofia concert of 1958 and the sonata and bagatelles are studio recordings. “Richter's sovereign pianism...is at times awe-inspiring. But the harsh sonics exaggerate his fierce commitment, making it aggressive.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Towering virtuosity that triumphs over the primitive Russian technology of the mid-1970s, sending out shockwaves of electrifying pianism, apparently without the slightest effort.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2012 ***** “prospective viewers should be aware that the tape is getting on for forty years old now. The sound quality is certainly pretty reasonable...The [Beethoven] playing is crisp, forthright accenting in the left hand setting up energy and dynamism. His Chopin recital is of lighter material, Waltzes and Mazurkas, all of which are played with commitment and energy.” MusicWeb International, January 2013 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Dvorak, Grieg & Schumann: Piano Concertos

| | | Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 8, 17 & 23
Regis presents three of Beethoven’s most popular piano sonatas played by the incomparable Sviatoslav Richter, available at super-budget price. “Richter's febrile Beethoven is sometimes closer to Scriabin than to Vienesse tradition, but who's complaining? He lives every second. It's richly coloured, vividly phrased: terrific.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 ***** “The Appassionata performance seems to me to be supremely satisfying; for sheer boldness of interpretation and brilliance of piano-playing it makes one gasp.” Gramophone Magazine “Richter narrates a story employing many voices...The Appassionata was one of Richter’s signature works, frequently performed and recorded. Here, it really lives up to the implications of its sobriquet...You will never hear greater dexterity or more thrilling playing than the way he steers the Presto to its climactic conclusion. This recording remains justly famous for its power and poetry.” MusicWeb International, July 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Beethoven: Triple Concerto
“The warm, expansive music-making confirms even more clearly than before that the old view of this as one of Beethoven's weaker works is quite wrong. The three Soviet soloists revel in the multiplicity of ideas, with Richter in the spare piano part providing a tautening influence.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Sviatoslav RichterRoyal Festival Hall, 11 June 1967
Sviatoslav Richter (1915–1997) is acknowledged today as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century along with his great Russian contemporaries, David Oistrakh, Emil Gilels and Mstislav Rostropovich. This rare broadcast recording makes its first appearance on CD. The June 1967 recital at the Royal Festival Hall very much reflects the pianist’s personal taste, containing the rarely played Haydn and Weber Sonatas together with the Schumann Novelettes with the more popular additions of Chopin and Debussy. He declared, ‘my principle is to play only works that I really love and not just those that are currently accepted’. Of all the Haydn Sonatas that Richter played, No.62 featured more frequently in his programmes as did the Weber Sonata No.3, which he regarded in a notebook entry in 1990 as a ‘highly original work and I like it a lot’. The two Schumann Novelettes were often played in the 1960s though Richter did not perform No.8 for the following two decades. With the Chopin and Debussy, Richter is on familiar territory, which he invests with his characteristic imagination and spontaneity. Superb Ambient Mastering recreates the atmosphere in the Royal Festival Hall perfectly. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
