Mendelssohn, Berg & Bruch: Violin Concertos

Mendelssohn, Berg & Bruch: Violin Concertos

Berg:

Violin Concerto 'To the Memory of an Angel' (1935)

Bruch:

Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26

Mendelssohn:

Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64

“Teetering on the brink of expressive exaggeration in the more reflective moments of the first movement [of the Berg] and resisting queasy intimacy in the second in favour of a very public kind of emotional outpouring, the sheer conviction of the whole enterprise carries all before it.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2010

“Suk at his incomparably eloquent, unaffacted best. Ancerl and the Czech PO provide luminous support, and Supraphon's mid-60s sound has come up very freshly.
Josef Suk gives an outstanding performance of the Mendelssohn – his playing combines his usual technical polish and fine tone with unaffected expression. The orchestra has exemplary internal balance and rhythmic poise. The Bruch has similar virtues, and there's more great music-making in the Berg. The sound has been remastered and is uncommonly clear: highly recommended.”

Mendelssohn & Beethoven: Piano Trios

Mendelssohn & Beethoven: Piano Trios

Beethoven:

Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 1 No. 3

Mendelssohn:

Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49

Josef Suk (violin), János Starker (cello), Rudolf Buchbinder (piano)

Josef Suk, János Starker and Rudolf Buchbinder made guest appearance at the Schwetzingen SWRFestival in 1973 – three internationally known, even famous presented two of the most celebrated works of the piano trio repertoire. Suk and Starker had previously enjoyed great success in the 1960s as a piano trio together with pianist Julius Katchen, prior to his death in 1969. For this concert from May 1973, the two experienced instrumentalists chose the then only 27-year-old Rudolf Buchbinder as their pianist. Their decision has become one of the great moments of chamber music-making, full of sensitive – and when necessary – forceful music-making. This is also a fitting tribute to the late cellist János Starker, whom we lost last year.

“Suk's persuasive tone, Starker's fathomless poetry and Buchbinder's brilliance and acuity make a vivid blend in two favourite trios. These live performances offer founts of insight, beauty and conviction.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2014 ****
