The cover art was designed by Catalan painter Antoni Tapiès shortly before his death in February. The 1000-page book features texts by renowned writers, like the French scholar Edgar Morin. 20 years after having worked on the soundtrack of Jacques Rivette’s movie “Jeanne la Pucelle”, Jordi Savall has decided to dedicate this new album to the mother figure of the struggle for French independence. Music fully enables us to rediscover this icon. Works by composers from the time of Joan of Arc (Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Johannes Vincenet, Johannes Cornago, etc.) but also compositions and arrangements by Jordi Savall paint the vivid portrait of a troubled time. Texts by Joan of Arc, including the record of her trial, are read in masterly fashion by French actress and director Louise Moaty. In 2006 Road to the Orient (AVSA9856) was released by Alia Vox. This double album was a musical portrait of Francisco Javier and of his trip from Spain to Japan. On this occasion, Jordi Savall met Japanese musicians who soon became his friends and with whom he performed in many concerts around the world. Consequently, following the catastrophes in Japan, Jordi Savall decided to release this special tribute album in which the most significant pieces of the dialogue between Spain and Japan are gathered. A premiere in the history of CD packaging !
