Dvorak & Schumann: Cello Concertos

Dvorak:

Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104

Waldesruhe (Silent woods) for cello and orchestra, Op. 68 No. 5

Schumann:

Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129

Jamie Walton is joined by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of their conductor laureate Vladimir Ashkenazy for this new concerto recording of concertos and orchestral works by Dvorák and Schumann.

Jamie Walton has proved himself as a leading light in UK's musical life; as a performer in his widely praised concerto and sonata recordings, and as a festival director in his work as founder of the North York Moors Festival, which was shortlisted for an RPS Award in 2011.

“Jamie Walton’s individual phrases are eloquently lyrical and the technical components are accomplished” The Strad, May 2013

“The two concertos on either side of this lovely miniature, ably supported by the Philharmonia, confirm Walton as an artist with secure intuition in terms of style and with a manner of performing that speaks with natural fluency, eloquence and strength of purpose.” The Telegraph, 8th March 2013 ****

Chopin & Saint-Saëns: Cello Sonatas

Chopin & Saint-Saëns: Cello Sonatas

Chopin:

Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65

Introduction and Polonaise Brillante in C, Op. 3

Saint-Saëns:

Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major Op. 123

Jamie Walton (cello) & Daniel Grimwood (piano)

Two works from very different composers: Chopin’s works for cello were few and far between, but these two straddle his compositional life: the Introduction and Polonaise was written in 1829 when he was just 19, and the Cello Sonata of 1845-6 is his last work published during his lifetime: all latter works with opus numbers being published posthumously, against his wishes. By contrast, Saint-Saëns published a great many works for the cello, as well as works in almost every genre of the classical canon, with the Cello Sonata No.2 composed during his travels in Biskra, Algeria.

Jamie Walton and Daniel Grimwood are performers who have proven themselves, in both concert and recordings, to be formidable and enthralling interpreters of the classical canon. This release follows their previous duo disc of Rachmaninov and Grieg cello sonatas on Signum.

“intensely passionate performances of two of the most overtly romantic cello sonatas. The Saint-Saens Second is here full of heroic power, its long lyric passages sweeping forward in a golden glow of cello tone. Grimwood’s piano makes a powerful partner that continues in a rhythmically pliable and vigorous reading of Chopin’s neglected score. Excellent recording that perfectly captures the beauty of Walton’s playing.” Yorkshire Evening Post, 27th May 2011

“Jamie Walton’s mature cello timbre and perceptiveness in matters of interpretation are winningly applied to this coupling of two 19th-century sonatas. His musical partnership with Daniel Grimwood brings special immediacy and finesse to these performances...Finely honed stylistic judgment here goes hand in hand with re-creative panache.” The Telegraph, 9th June 2011 *****

“Walton's sound in this excellent recording is open and luminous. Daniel Grimwood is more than a match for his extravagant part [in the Saint-Saens]...There's plenty of Mendelssohnian magic here in both the lazily eloquent and fleet-footed variations, and an infectious sense of enjoyment...Their fine performance of Chopin's great Sonata clears its technical hurdles with ease.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2011 ****

“Jamie Walton is alive to the twists and turns of Saint-Saens's imagination and brings to the sonata a warm, rich sound that is initially very persuasive, ably supported by Daniel Grimwood, who surmounts the considerable challenges of the piano-writing with ease and musicality.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2011

Cello Concerto

Jamie Walton (cello)

The Philharmonia Orchestra, Alexander Briger

The outstanding British cellist Jamie Walton returns to disc on Signum, accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Alexander Briger. This disc includes Walton’s 1975 revision to the final movement of the cello concerto, which has never before been recorded or publicly performed (as well as a performance of the original final movement).

This disc completes an Anglo-Russian trilogy of recordings by Jamie with this orchestra and conductor, proceed by pairings of Elgar & Myaskovsky Cello Concertos, and Britten & Shostakovich (Cello Symphony & Cello Concerto No.2).

“his rich, malleable tone and mature sense of style [are] deployed with the discerning interpretative personality that places him in the front rank of today’s cellists...the Shostakovich that is lithe, pungent and, just as it should be, profoundly disquieting.” The Telegraph, 14th January 2011 *****

“Jamie Walton's warm and beautifully focused way with the work excels in its own right...The same unflashily vivid brilliance brings in a rich harvest in Shostakovich's First Concerto...his keening way with the slow movement's lyrical lament marks out a remarkable player. Alexander Briger and the Philharmonia supply superb accompaniments.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2011 ****

“The elegiac quality in [the Walton] very much suits Jamie Walton's style, with his sweet, smooth cello tone, but he is also capable of powerfully attacking the vigorous writing...[the Shostakovich] is a most compelling performance, very strong rhythmically, with the Philharmonia's first horn relishing what amounts to a concertante role...A most valuable and enjoyable disc” Gramophone Magazine, March 2011

“Walton's sound is superbly suited to [the Walton] - he has a singing, expressive upper register, as well as the agility to dive fearlessly into the more virtuoso passages; this is playing of tremednous authority and control...[In the Shostakovich] Walton and Briger generate impressive levels of rhythmic energy, and the playing has all the spiky allure one could wish for in this piece.” International Record Review, March 2011

Britten:

Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 65

Prokofiev:

Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 119

Shostakovich:

Cello Sonata in D minor, Op. 40

Jamie Walton (cello) & Daniel Grimwood (piano)

Jamie Walton and Daniel Grimwood continue their performance partnership with this recording of sonatas for cello and piano by Shostakovich, Britten and Prokofiev. Walton and Grimwood are accomplished performers who regularly work together both on disc and in concert, as well being highly active in the wider musical world.

A recent highlight for Walton is his North York Moors Chamber Music Festival (where both he and Grimwood performed), which was nominated for a Royal Philharmonic society award in 2011.

“Walton and Grimwood consistently bring out the echoes of Soviet music that Britten no doubt intended as a tribute to his dedicatee...The natural warmth of Walton's playing, matching that of Rostropovich himself, is finely enhanced by the crispness and fresh focus of Grimwood's accompaniments. Clear, well-balanced recording helps to make this a first-rate issue.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012

“Theirs is a true partnership, responding with like minds to the lyrical, quizzical and visceral aspects of the [Shostakovich] sonata’s trajectory...Individual episodes in the Britten are sharply focused in character but integrated into a broad, organic structure...This is highly cultured playing, rich in enjoyment.” The Telegraph, 9th March 2012 *****

Rachmaninov & Grieg - Cello Sonatas

Rachmaninov & Grieg - Cello Sonatas

Grieg:

Cello Sonata in A minor, Op. 36

Rachmaninov:

Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 19

Jamie Walton (cello) & Daniel Grimwood (piano)

An exhilarating disc that showcases the talents of two of the UK's finest instrumentalists, cellist Jamie Walton and pianist Daniel Grimwood join forces to perform two masterful chamber-music works by Rachmaninov and Grieg.

“…what I love about both these performances is their spontaneity, flow and warmth, their natural ease with the idiom of both composers. Walton achieves a fabulous legato in the Rachmaninov's Sonata, so that one feels it is really being sung… Grieg's Sonata is a more challenging work to negotiate. Walton can produce a special purity of tone, heard to great effect in a searching slow movement, but he also lets the air into his bowing in a highly articulate Allegro agitato. ...towards the end of the taxing finale... both players create a blazing climax, in which we taste the extent of their charismatic daring.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2010 *****

“the musical give-and-take of these players is excellent: they seize upon the music with enthusiasm, energy and sensitivity – one can almost sense that they are keen to show us just how fine this music is … strongly recommended. It is good to see these young artists taking up these works with such conspicuous success.” International Record Review

Philharmonia Orchestra, Alexander Briger

Jamie Walton's second disc with Signum promises to follow in the formidable footsteps of his first release with the Philharmonia, where he played Elgar and Myaskovsky. The critical reaction to this disc has been phenomenal, from both mainstream papers and musical journals. Jamie's performance of the Elgar has also received a large amount of airplay support from Classic FM and much interest has already been expressed in this new recording.

“Walton is a superb and unflashy exponent - there's no ego here, just consummate musicianship, excellently backed by the Philharmonia under Alex Briger, sensitive and biting in the Shostakovich, formidable and powerful in the Britten.” The Times

Elgar & Myaskovsky - Cello Concertos

Elgar:

Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85

Miaskovsky:

Cello Concerto in C minor, Op. 66

Jamie Walton (cello)

The Philharmonia Orchestra, Alexander Briger

Although conceived by utterly divergent characters in lands and times that engender few similarities these days, the cello concertos by Elgar and Myaskovsky make a fascinating coupling. Both men were in their early sixties when writing what was their only concertante work for the instrument, and the prevailing mood of both concertos is one of aristocratic wistfulness married to a mastery of form and rhetoric.

Jamie Walton studied at Wells Cathedral School and the RNCM with Margaret Moncrieff before taking private tuition with William Pleeth who wrote of Jamie: "He is a cellist of outstanding performance ability. Combining warmth of tone with a technical command that reaches dazzling proportions, he leaves little doubt as the success that lies ahead of him.”

"I really cannot praise this performance too highly. Walton cannot be beaten. I shall treasure this recording - literally: I shall hoard it against a musically rainy day: I shall play it from time to time, to restore my faith in the work If I ever again have the misfortune to hear too many inadequate performances. It will, I am sure, do the job every time." The Elgar Society Journal

“One of the finest recordings of the Elgar. Jamie Walton has a formidable technique; his playing in the scherzo and the finale is beyond compare; and he captures the autumnal melancholy without loss of vitality. His pianissimos in the finale coda are a wonder. He has like-minded collaborators in the Philharmonia and Alexander Briger, who also support him in Myaskovsky's sombre concerto of 1945.” Sunday Telegraph *****
