| | | Claudio Abbado conducts Prokofiev, Berg & TchaikovskyLucerne Festival at Easter 2010
Five years after first conducting the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra in their Venezuelan home, Claudio Abbado continues his commitment to this stunning ensemble in this first joint audiovisual concert recording. Prokofiev’s extrovert Scythian Suite is a gift for the boundless energy of these young players, while the intricacy and anguish of Berg’s Lulu-Suite are an Abbado speciality, with soprano Anna Prohaska, in her Lucerne Festival debut, singing the heroine’s dazzling statement of self-justification. The concert ends with an impassioned account of Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique, his final symphony, one of the most moving works in music history. Picture Format Blu-Ray: HDCAM 1080/59,94 Sound Formats Blu-Ray: DTS HD Master Audio PCM Stereo Region Code: 0 (worldwide) Booklet notes: Songtexts in German Running Time: 111:45 Disc Format: BD 25 FSK: 0 “It's amazing the way Abbado brings the melodic writing to the fore in the very different worlds of the Prokofiev and the Berg Lulu Suite, crowned by Anna Prohaska's meaningful characterisation...As for Tchaikovsky's Pathétique, I challenge you to sit unshaken through the way Abbado nurtures string tone, body and vibrato from his Latin players.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2011 **** “Aided by superb camera work, we see him, gaunt but energised, bringing sophistication and élan to Prokofiev’s monster canvas, conjuring magic and fragrance from the Berg and driving the Pathétique to the edge of the abyss.” Financial Times, 14th January 2011 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Dittersdorf, Vanhal & Hoffmeister: Double Bass ConcertosRecorded: Simon Bolivar Concert Hall, Caracas, Venezuela Sept 28 - Oct 3, 2009
Born in Caracas in 1985, Edicson Ruiz’ first taste of orchestral playing came with ‘El Sistema’, founded by José Antonio Abreu. Then, aged only 15, Edicson was awarded first prize at the International Society of Bassists´ competition in Indianapolis, making him the youngest winner of all time. Just two years later he was made a member of the Berlin Philharmonic´s double bass section, becoming not only the first Latin American musician to be so honoured but also the youngest ever in the history of the orchestra. Edicson is also active as a soloist and has given recitals at the Berlin Philharmonie, Lucerne Festival, Edinburgh International Festival and the Chopin Festival in Warsaw. Edicson Ruiz here turns his attention to the repertoire of the pre-Classical period, following in the footsteps of last great solo violonist Johann Hindle (1792-1862) by playing a four-stringed instrument with historical scordatura tuning. Conductor Christian Vásquez is also a protégé of the internationally known Venezuelan ‘Sistema’ and is already established as one of the most promising talents from the Americas. Born in 1984 in Caracas, he studied under the tutelage of Maestro Abreu, who has been a great proponent of his career. His debut as a conductor with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra took place in April 2008 in Caracas conducting Mahler’s Second Symphony. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. Some of the players are noticeably a touch nervous; it makes the Tchaikovsky grippingly heartfelt while the Berg...has an edgy quality that really brings it alive...Watching Abbado's response to these young Latinos, and vice-versa, reminds you of those transcendental human qualities music has...I can't imagine there being a more engaging audio-visual recording of [these works]” Classic FM Magazine, March 2011 **** “Aided by superb camera work, we see him, gaunt but energised, bringing sophistication and élan to Prokofiev’s monster canvas, conjuring magic and fragrance from the Berg and driving the Pathétique to the edge of the abyss.” Financial Times, 14th January 2011 **** “the combination of [Abbado's] sophisticated ear for sonority with the band's raw energy and sheer strength in numbers make for some terrific music-making...his exquisite touch is evident throughout in what is obviously a meticulously prepared account as well as a suitably emotive one...[Prohaska] is marvellous.” International Record Review, April 2011 BBC Music Magazine

Biella Da Costa (Latin-American alto), Jessica Rivera (soprano), Reynaldo González-Fernandez (Afro-Cuban vocalist), Gioconda Cabrera (Afro-Cuban vocalist), Manolo Mairena (Afro-Cuban vocalist) & Alex Alvear (vocals) Orquesta La Pasión, Members of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela & Schola Cantorum de Caracas, María Guinand Deftly exploiting the popular appeal and emotional immediacy of samba, salsa, flamenco, tango, and the elemental vigor of folk and popular motifs, Grammy® winner Osvaldo Golijov’s La Pasión según San Marcos sets Christ’s betrayal, death, and resurrection amidst the streets of Latin America. Osvaldo Golijov since refined Pasión to such an extent that Deutsche Grammophon felt it imperative to release this new studio recording in tandem with the DVD of a 2008 live performance. These supercede the 2000 audio-only live recording of the premiere by incorporating the revisions of “one of the most gifted composers of a new era” (All Things Considered, NPR). Specially priced: 2 CDs + 1 DVD “Hearing it is impressive enough, but the live DVD version adds to the experience...watching the musicians gesturing, grimacing, throwing out their hands and even dancing with such uncontrived enthusiasm is a reminder of how theatrical the simple business of performing music can be.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2010 ***** “Golijov's full-blooded account combines all the drama and intensity of a Greek tragedy with the sultry physicality of a Latin-American street carnival...The performance featured here is from the 2008 Holland Festival and includes at times quite breathtaking performances from [the] soloists” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010 “a vibrant, sonically colourful experience ...an engaging tapestry in which demotic forms and religious chorale combine with piquant, astringent energy.” The Independent, 26th March 2010 **** “impressively vivid” The Times, 20th March 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

A film by Paul Smaczny and Maria Stodtmeier. 'El Sistema', Venezuela's revolutionary system of music education, brings joy and hope to the lives of hundreds of thousands of impoverished children. This lyrical and very moving documentary takes us from the rubbish dumps and barrios of Caracas to the world's finest concert halls. Children from streets dominated by the gun battles of gang warfare are taken into music schools, given access to music, and taught through the model of the symphony orchestra how to build a better society and a better world. Gustavo Dudamel is the most prominent pupil of 'El Sistema', now named as the LA Philharmonic's music director as of the 2009-2010 season. 'El Sistema' shows how Venezuelan visionary, musician and economist, Jose Antonio Abreu, has changed the lives of hundred of thousands of children over the past three decades. Abreu earned several renowned prizes for his achievements, including the Crystal Award of the World Economic Forum, the TED Prize and recently the Polar Music Prize, given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. El Sistema comes with several awards to its name. Surely it can't be long before its remarkable founder Abreu is the recipient of a prize for peace?” Gramophone Magazine, January 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
