After Rafal’s hugely successful Deutsche Grammophon debut Chopin recording – almost 60,000 sold worldwide – music lovers await the unique interpretive contributions this winner of the 2005 International Chopin Competition will make to these two legendary concertos. Pianist Rafal Blechacz, returning to his beloved Chopin, teams up with the supreme musicianship of the Concertgebouw Orchestra under conducting legend, Jerzy Semkow. Rafal’s way with Concertos nos. 1 & 2 will be a landmark recording of this highly emotional, popular, and poetic music – a young master heralding Chopin’s 200th birthday in 2010 with an early birthday gift we all will love. “…poised, elegant, with broad paragraphs and expressive details impeccably shaped.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2009 “…I would trade these richly satisfying accounts any day for others that lack the musical integrity and clarity of conception that Blechacz and Semkow bring to these works.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Rafal Blechacz plays Debussy & Szymanowski
Rafał Blechacz is one of DG’s best-selling young artists – his stunning albums have sold more than 160,000 units worldwide. Blechacz is by talent, proclivity, and nationality the perfect choice to record works by his fellow Pole, Szymanowski, and therefore to record Debussy, too – whose presence in Szymanowski’s musical DNA looms large. Arguably the greatest Polish composer since Chopin, Szymanowski was also influenced by Ravel, Scriabin, and Strauss. For the first time on record Rafał Blechacz plays Szymanowski’s reverie-inducing music – a revelation to those unfamiliar with it. Debussy’s Impressionist soundscapes (also new to Rafał Blechacz’s discography) – including Pour le piano and Estampes – are also a natural fit for Blechacz with his Chopin expertise. “[the Szymanowski is] interpreted by Blechacz in a way that brings out its ripe personal voice and responds to its dramatic breadth of architecture...The disc is worth having for the Szymanowski alone, but Blechacz’s Debussy is also a joy of limpid colour and immaculately weighed articulation, encapsulating the character and imagery of the music with a masterly and imaginative touch.” The Telegraph, 17th February 2012 ***** “He's virtuosic on Debussy's "Pour le Piano", whisking us up and down the keyboard yet allowing pre-echoes of Gershwin to creep in to its more dramatic chordings; his "Pagodes" is weightlessly evocative. There's an almost existential yearning about Szymanowski's "Prelude & Fugue in C sharp minor", while "Sonata in C minor" is complex and involving.” The Independent, 17th February 2012 **** “this pairing of Debussy and Szymanowski confirms Blechacz is much more than a one-trick pianist; he's an artist of imagination and perception, with a fabulous range of keyboard touch and colour. There's nothing obvious or ostentatious about his playing, either...the clarity of the playing is exceptional, but so, too, is the intelligence shaping it. It's a remarkable disc.” The Guardian, 1st March 2012 ***** “Blechacz’s Debussy is little short of miraculous, revelling in the luminous textures and tintinnabulating chinoiserie of Pagodes, from Estampes, the Lisztian flourishes of Jardins sous la pluie and the Gallic sensuality of La Soirée dans Grenade and L’Isle joyeuse. This is an unforgettable disc from one of the pianistic giants of our time.” Sunday Times, 11th March 2012 “This is breathtaking...There is never any doubt that there is a personality shaping the music and he has no fear about following his interpretative instinct on the day the microphones happen to be capturing it for posterity...Blechacz paints with the keyboard without sacrificing any clarity.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2012 **** “I thought this was going to be a a disc of two halves. In fact, it is more of a continuous journey - and a most rewarding, artfully conceived one it is, too...I love Blechacz's crisp articulation and lightly pedalled bustle in the outer movements of Pour le piano...Blechacz's [Szymanowski] has the edge on [the competition] as much for his fierce emotional engagement with the music as for the superior sound quality.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012 “His Debussy is transparent, pure, yet not lacking in depth, driven with impetus and excitement. The real finds here, however, are the two early works by Karol Szymanowski...virtuoso pianism at full stretch.” The Observer, 29th April 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven - Piano Sonatas
Rafal Blechacz’s debut album for Deutsche Grammophon, the complete Chopin Preludes, went platinum in Poland within a month of its release. He now follows up this success with a recital devoted to the “Viennese Classics”: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. A compelling overview of the piano sonatas of these three great masters, combining Haydn’s mature E flat major Sonata with Mozart’s lovely D major Sonata K. 311 and Beethoven’s early Sonata op. 2 no. 2, which he dedicated to his teacher Haydn Rafal has played these sonatas many times in concert and counts them among the works that have shaped his playing. By juxtaposing the different styles of these three great composers, Rafal displays his stylistic security and balance, both of which have been widely acclaimed in recent concert reviews “He’s an architect in sonority. Every nuance, however tiny, seems to emerge just as Blechacz intended it . . . Judiciously measured and deeply felt music-making of mature pianistic insight.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) “The playing itself is full of flair and charm. The Mozart brims with joie de vivre, displaying a classical poise and subtlety of expressive range.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2008 **** “Textural transparency, expressive economy, creative inspiration, high humour and strategically placed silences characterise these three Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart sonatas, as well as Rafal Blechacz's splendid, beautifully recorded interpretations.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Chopin - Complete Preludes
“Blechacz is a superlative pianist but an even finer musician, and this is playing of exceptional clarity and expressive beauty. Everything Blechacz does seems natural and organic, and his ability to phrase Chopin's long lines with an innate sense of time and space is a constant joy.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2007 ***** “Pure magic, filigree detailing and gorgeous trills and turns. He has an almost feminine elegance and a command of technique that allows him to print a personal inflection even on a cascade of notes . . . How reassuring it is to see one so young putting poetry first . . . we were all on another planet.” Financial Times, August 2006 BBC Music Magazine

A completely reworked version of the 1999 DG Edition, now split between DG and Decca recordings. 17 CDs, non-limited, in capbox. Pollini recordings backbone of collection (Etudes, Sonatas, Polonaises, Scherzos) New DG Highlights: Zimerman's Concertos, Blechacz's Preludes, Pires's Nocturnes New from Decca: Arrau - Piano Works with orchestra, Ashkenazy - Mazurkas and Waltzes. Available for the Chopin 200th anniversary in March 2010. “The quality, both of DG's chosen recordings and the set's general presentation, is just about as good as it gets. To have in one box such wonders as Zimmerman's Ballades, Pollini's Etudes, Pires's Nocturnes, Ashkenazy's Mazurkas and Waltzes, and the Cello Sonata incandescently performed by Rostropovich and Argerich is a treat indeed and could scarcely by bettered. The Concertos are Zimmerman's second recording. ...it is gorgeously romantic, with every string slide cherished and each note turned like wrought gold. This is a set to treasure...” BBC Music Magazine, February 2010 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
