Rachmaninov: Piano Trios

Rachmaninov: Piano Trios

Rachmaninov:

Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor, Op. post.

Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor, Op. 9

Lise de la Salle (piano), Bartlomiej Niziol (violin), Claudius Herrmann (cello)

It was in devastation at the sudden death of his champion, idol and close friend Tchaikovsky that Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his Trio élégiaque No. 2 (op. 9) for piano, violin and cello in 1893. The work still clearly shows the young composer’s early artistic influences, while also featuring many of the key elements of his later masterly creations.

As artist-in-residence with the Philharmonia Zurich, French pianist Lise de la Salle has already performed and recorded works by Rachmaninov for piano and orchestra, the latter on Philharmonia Records in 2015. She now follows this up with a studio recording of his Trio élégiaque No. 2 together with its smaller brother, Trio élégiaque No. 1. De la Salle interprets these rarely-recorded chamber music pieces together with Bartlomiej Niziol, first concertmaster and Claudius Herrmann, solo cellist of the Philharmonia Zurich.

A Sorrowful Tale, Op. 13

Lithuanian Rhapsody, Op. 11

Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 8

Bartlomiej Niziol (violin)

Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra, Lukasz Borowicz

Mieczysław karłowicz (1876-1909) was born in Lithuania and educated in Berlin and Warsaw. He was a solitary composer, not really finding himself ‘well in’ with the group of composers of his time, which was the period of modernism. Among them, and right next to Karol Szymanowski, he was with no doubt the most outstanding one. The Violin Concerto (1902) which is in traditional form, has Tchaikovsky's concerto as patron. It is a truly visionary piece, filled with Slavonic lyricism and melodiousness.

Rimsky Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35

Rimsky Korsakov: Scheherazade, Op. 35

One of the greatest musical creations of Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is undoubtedly his Scheherazade symphonic suite. The work, which is based on the famous tales of Princess Scheherazade of the Arabian Nights, has now been interpreted by the Philharmonia Zurich with its general music director Fabio Luisi at the rostrum. And one of its Zurich Opera House performances –with the ensemble “in top form”, to quote the Neue Zürcher Zeitung – has now been committed to CD. “Concertmaster Bartlomiej Niziol, who, with his solo violin, embodies the figure of Scheherazade as she tells her life story, plays his prominent part with impeccable intonation and great creative freedom; and Fabio Luisi conducts with a keenly emotional air and, with deftly-varied drive and restraint, brings the whole tale to outstanding dramatic life.”
