Scriabin: The Ten Piano Sonatas & Fantasy

Scriabin: The Ten Piano Sonatas & Fantasy

Piano Sonatas Nos. 1-10

Fantasy in B minor, Op. 28

The progression of Scriabin’s work as embodied in his ten piano sonatas chronicle the development and unfolding of a unique voice which to this day sings unlike any other in musical history. Garrick Ohlsson offers titanic readings of these ever-fascinating works. Since his triumph as winner of the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition, Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical prowess. Garrick Ohlsson commands an enormous repertoire, and this "Complete Scriabin Sonatas" joins his "Complete Beethoven Sonatas" and "Complete Scriabin Etudes" on the Bridge Records label.

“Ohlsson delivers the single best performance with his account of Sonata No. 9, Black Mass. Here he appears genuinely engaged with Scriabin’s febrile world…Consistent qualities throughout Ohlsson’s set include his infallibly precise delineation of line and texture, any sense of rambling avoided by his clear articulation of each sonata’s structure…” BBC Music Magazine, April 2017 ***

“He [Scriabin] is exploring, discovering, altering, and would soon break through musical boundaries (parallel to, but different from, Schoenberg) and invoking the occult, becoming a high-priest of mysticism…it’s the sonatas from the Mephisto-like No 5 onward, all single-movement affairs, which especially fascinate: volatile, perfumed, enchanted, satanic…Garrick Ohlsson is technically and musically fluent…his sympathy and clarity are notable.” Classical Ear, 13th April 2017 ****

“To all this Ohlsson is a reliable guide. He has power and a commendable grasp of structure, so that Sonata No. 7, for example, comes out as a more Beethovenian work than usual. He can also be graceful and delicate: the three part passages in Sonata No. 4 and elsewhere come out with the right kind of glitter and sparkle.” MusicWeb International, May 2017

Smetana: Czech Dances & On the seashore

Smetana: Czech Dances & On the seashore

On the Sea Shore

Czech dances for piano, books 1 & 2 (14)

Smetana’s two sets of Czech Dances—the first comprising four Chopin-esque Polkas, the second exploring other dance forms more associated with Dvořák—provide the ideal vehicle for the understated pianism of Garrick Ohlsson. The evocative tone poem in miniature On the seashore completes the programme.

“A large part of the flavours in these readings derives from the aplomb with which Ohlsson negotiates tempo fluctuations within individual dances, as if to the manner born. Listening to them, it’s easy to feel that Smetana’s ambition to do for the polka what Chopin did for the mazurka was fully realised…what an accomplishment to present them not only lovingly but fairly bursting with character” Gramophone Magazine, May 2016

“Notwithstanding the essential simplicity of their form, Smetana imbues [the Czech Dances] with considerable sophistication. The first has a musing, reflective quality captured beautifully by Ohlsson, and the joyous effervescence of the right hand figuration in the second is suitably dazzling…Ohlsson’s performances are consistently attractive…this beautifully recorded issue will certainly not disappoint” BBC Music Magazine, June 2016 ****

“A delightful discovery and a companion to the dances of Brahms and Dvorak.” MusicWeb International, 12th August 2016

Debussy, Bartók & Prokofiev: Études

Debussy, Bartók & Prokofiev: Études

3 Studies, BB 81, Sz. 72, Op. 18

Études pour piano (12) (complete)

Four Etudes, Op. 2

Garrick Ohlsson has an unbeaten reputation as the master of the miniature. In this new recital he presents three sets of Études: the twelve by Claude Debussy (so ferocious in their demands they were shunned even by elite pianists for decades), as well as Prokofiev’s revolutionary opus 2 and a set of three lesser-known works by Bartók. In all Ohlsson excels.

“His powerful technique motors through Prokofiev’s four miniatures with tremendous confidence, relishing their naughty-boy dissonances, and he treats the Lisztian flourishes that occasionally surface in the modernist currents of Bartók’s three pieces with suitable flamboyance. There are some fine moments in the Debussy set, too.” The Guardian, 23rd July 2015 ****

Deux Danses Op. 73

For all of his short adult life, Alexander Scriabin wrote—or planned to write—monumental works of great import, and in between these efforts he produced a steady torrent of miniatures, tiny concentrated droplets of this same expansive genius. Fascinatingly, the composer’s designation ‘poème’ is applied both to ground-breaking symphonic perorations and to the extended series of thirty-four little piano pieces, written over more than a decade and often grouped into little sets. Their inspirations are as varied as their titles—from black magic to cosmic aspiration—and they offer a key into their composer’s inner world.

American pianist Garrick Ohlsson is an acknowledged master of the genre—astonished critical reaction to his recordings of Brahms, Granados and of course Chopin attest to this—and this new Scriabin recording will only enhance an admirable reputation.

“Ohlsson understands such obsessiveness as well as any pianist alive today, and what his performances occasionally lack in colour and variety they make up in effortless virtuosity and total musical command.” The Guardian, 5th February 2015 ****

Charles Tomlinson Griffes: Piano Music

Charles Tomlinson Griffes: Piano Music

Three Tone Poems

Fantasy Pieces, Op. 6

Roman Sketches, Op. 7

Piano Sonata in F sharp minor

De Profundis

Winter Landscape

Three Preludes

The American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes’s piano works represent a remarkable musical achievement. Griffes was active as a composer for little more than twelve years, and did not write prolifically, but nevertheless produced pieces of great maturity which are both concise and extraordinarily powerful, showing the contemporary European influences to which he was exposed but also demonstrating a highly individual compositional voice. His Roman Sketches Op 7 contains his most famous work, ‘The White Peacock’—an acknowledged Impressionist masterpiece—while the final movement, ‘Clouds’, clearly heralds the language of modernism.

Almost all of Griffes’s piano music is present here, and the composer has never been better served on record than by his compatriot Garrick Ohlsson, who here applies the full force of his interpretive and technical prowess.

“There are pieces here that combine the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel with the obsessive thematic working of Scriabin; others, a bit later, that suggest the primitivism of Stravinsky and Garrick Ohlsson's superb performances show, Griffes's piano writing is wonderfully fluent” The Guardian, 25th April 2013 ****

“Hugely commanding and authoritative; a landmark in every way.” MusicWeb International, 15th May 2013

“I was only a few seconds into listening to this CD...when I realised it was going to be very special indeed. Hyperion's immaculate piano sound helps, too. But Ohlsson's phrasing is perfect: no exaggeration, simply rapturous harmonic textures projecting elegant melodies...Griffes can never have sounded better.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2013

“Ohlsson's performances throughout are a judicious blend of absolute technical security and fantasy, giving especially appealing treatment to the simple melodies that emerge occasionally from Griffes's teeming textures...this disc makes a compelling case for a masterly figure in American musical history.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2013 *****

Brahms: The Complete Variations

Brahms: The Complete Variations

for solo piano

Theme and Variations in D minor (arr. from String Sextet, Op. 18)

Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24

Variations on an Original Theme in D major, Op. 21, No. 1

Variations on a Hungarian Song in D major, Op. 21 No. 2

Variations on a theme by Schumann in F sharp minor, Op. 9

Variations on a theme by Paganini in A minor, Op. 35

American pianist Garrick Ohlsson, whose Complete Chopin set was acclaimed as one of the most important anniversary releases of 2010, now turns to another significant, though often overlooked, body of Romantic piano music – Brahms’s complete variations.

The coruscatingly difficult Paganini variations, a bravura display of pyrotechnic virtuosity, frequently feature in piano competitions, performed to demonstrate extraordinary technique. In this performance, Garrick Ohlsson also displays remarkable musicality.

The Variations and Fugue on a theme of Handel is one of the summits of his entire keyboard output, showing the composer at the height of his powers. This 2-disc set also contains some little-known gems, including the wonderful Variations on an Original Theme.

“Ohlsson’s muscular performance does not ignore the yearning that lies beneath the surface.” The Telegraph, 22nd October 2010 ***

“These highly absorbing discs bring together all Brahms’s freestanding variation sets for piano in poised, intense performances.” Sunday Times, 3rd October 2010 ***

“An near to flawless collection of piano variations from the American piano virtuoso” The Times, 9th October 2010 ****

“These early variations [Op. 18] are light years away from the intimacy of Brahms's late piano pieces, and Ohlsson's iron-clad technique and robust, forward tone generally suit them well.” The Guardian, 14th October 2010 ***

“he's a born Brahmsian, equipped at the highest level with the necessary speed and power, the muscular strength and facility of finger tempered by breadth of outlook and solidity of intellect.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2010 *****

“Here is none of the turgid, bass-heavy portentousness that so often bedevils recordings of Brahms's music...This is a great Brahms recording that elevates and illuminates the music with a lightness of touch and heart that eludes many (yet he can darken the tone when required, as in Var. 13)” Gramophone Magazine, November 2010
