Vittorio Grigolo was born in 1977 and grew up in Rome, where he was a member of the Sistine Chapel Choir and sang the role of the Shepherd-Boy in Tosca opposite Luciano Pavarotti; he began his career as a tenor at the Wiener Staatsoper aged 18 and made his debut at La Scala aged just 23, making him the youngest tenor to perform at the house in history.

Grigolo concentrates on Italian repertoire, with key roles including the Duke in Verdi’s Rigoletto (which he sang on location in Mantua for a film-version of the opera opposite Plácido Domingo in the title-role), Cavaradossi in Tosca, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor; more recently, he has also had great success in the title-roles of Les contes d’Hoffmann (‘his is a rare vocal talent matched to a star personality’ – The Telegraph) and Massenet’s Werther opposite Joyce DiDonato at Covent Garden.

Grigolo signed to Sony in 2010; his recordings for the label have included The Italian Tenor (‘the real thing: a shining, stylish romantic hero in the great tradition of the Italian tenor’ – The Observer), Arrivederci (‘emotion courses through every syllable’ – The Independent), and The Romantic Hero (‘the voice has a smooth yet vibrant timbre which projects brightly and steadily’ – The Telegraph).
