Christine Brewer (Soprano)
American dramatic soprano Christine Brewer was born in Illinois in 1955 and worked as a music teacher before training as a singer. She began her singing career in St Louis, and won the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions in 1989, making her debut at the theatre (as Strauss’s Ariadne) in 2003; she was scheduled to sing Brünnhilde there in 2009 but a knee injury forced her to withdraw. Brewer is particularly associated with operatic roles by Strauss and Wagner, and with Mahler and Britten on the concert-platform: her discography includes Mahler 8 with Sir Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Britten’s War Requiem with Kurt Masur and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, several song recitals with Roger Vignoles, and Agathe in Der Freischütz and Leonore in Fidelio with Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony Orchestra (‘[Brewer] sings the notes more effortlessly, and with thrilling attack at the top of her range, than any other contemporary Leonore’ – International record Review).
