The exotic setting of Fanciulla places the opera in California during the 1849-50 gold rush and is one of Puccini’s most innovative scores - both harmonically and orchestrally. It was a great success from the start and offers great opportunities for spectacle as well as requiring a team of singers with great acting abilities. This live recording from La Scala is headed by Mara Zampieri and Plácido Domingo as Minnie and Dick Johnson, under veteran Puccini conductor Lorin Maazel. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Leo Nucci, Ghena Dimitrova, Peter Dvorsky, Sona Ghazarian, Giacomo Aragall, Ruggero Raimondi, Elena Obraztsova, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Natalia Troitskaya, Luca Canonici, Montserrat Caballé, Placido Domingo, Samuel Ramey, Aprile Millo, Vincenzo La Scola, Mara Zampieri, René Kollo, Silvano Carolli, Eva Marton, Juan Pons, Antonio Ordonez, Ileana Cotrubas & José Carreras Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid, José Collado, Carlo Franci Montserrat Caballé, Samuel Ramey, Ileana Cotrubas, René Kollo, Eva Marton, and Ruggero Raimondi were amongst the many opera stars from all over the world who came together at the great Arena in Verona on 8th August 1988 to support José Carreras and the establishment of his foundation to fight leukaemia. The much-loved tenor had recently recovered from this life threatening illness and the recordings included in this special two-CD set are the aural documents of this memorable gala. Although Placido Domingo was unable to take part that evening, he too supported his friend, providing a recording of a song by zarzuela composer Jacinto Guerrero at Carreras’s disposal for the concert in aid of foundation and this album. The discs include highlights from La Bohème, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Manon Lescaut, La Giaconda, Otello, La Traviata and many other operas. August 8th, 1988 was a great evening for José Carreras. It went on until after two o’clock in the morning, but the packed audience in the Arena in Verona did not want to go yet. They held aloft signs and banners on which they hailed the singer, who had returned to life, with heartfelt words in many languages. He was the last to perform after the greats of opera had sung for him throughout the evening. For the first time since his convalescence Carreras again stood in front of an orchestra. His strength was only sufficient for a single song - Lara’s Granada - with which his voice could outshine the waves of the instruments. “This Verona concert featuring more than 20 opera stars in showpiece arias celebrated Carreras's return to performing following his recovery from leukaemia.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 **** |

| | | Live Recording 1979
It is a truism that each evening in the theatre is a unique event that cannot be repeated, even as part of a run of performances. One such exceptional performance was the first of three concert performances of Saverio Mercadante's rarely performed Il Giuramento, threatened with cancellation when the tenor scheduled to sing the main role fell ill and it seemed impossible to find a replacement. In the event, Plácido Domingo sang the part flawlessly after only a day in which to learn the role, thereby underscoring what, even then, was the exceptional position that he has maintained in the operatic world ever since. | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Puccini’s Wild West opera has the California gold rush as its dramatic backdrop for a story in which Minnie, the only woman in a mining camp, gambles on her one chance of happiness. Lorin Maazel conducts a fine cast in Jonathan Miller’s 1991 production of the compelling and evocative opera, which Puccini himself considered his best work. PICTURE FORMAT: 4:3

“The Fanciulla del West offers a large contingent of good Italian comprimarii, a marvellous leading lady… competent support from Plácido Domingo and Juan Pons… decent, rather laid-back Jonathan Miller productions.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2004 *** “This DVD of La fanciulla del West presents Jonathan Miller's atmospheric production for La Scala, with sets by Stefanos Lazaridis and costumes by Sue Blane. The cast is strong, and Lorin Maazel proves a warmer, more idiomatic Puccinian here than he generally was in his audio recordings for CBS/Sony. His direction makes one marvel afresh at the imagination and colour in this score, distinct from other Puccini operas in its obsession with the whole-tone scale. Miller's production takes the melodrama seriously, with realistic sets and period costumes. It even manages to bring off the improbable scene in Act 2 when Sherriff Rance finds Dick Johnson's blood dripping down from the loft of Minnie's cabin, leading to the game of poker when Minnie blatantly cheats. Though at the end Dick and Minnie get no further than the back of the stage instead of riding off into the sunset, the authentic gulp of emotion is well caught in this rare Puccini happy ending. Plácido Domingo is in superb voice, and wins ovations for each of his big solos. Juan Pons is wonderfully firm and dark of tone as Jack Rance. Though Mara Zampieri as Minnie sings with clear focus and no suspicion of a wobble, the result is often near to hooting – a strong performance, nonetheless. Camerawork is a little fussy but not too distracting. Not only is the documentation fuller than usual in DVD booklets, with a facsimile of the opera-house's cast-list on the back, it also contains a complete (if minuscule) libretto and translation.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “What matters is that the singing cast is strong, and Lorin Maazel's conducting is persuasive...Domingo is in superb voice and rightly wins ovations for each of his big solos...Pons is wonderfully firm and dark of tone as Jack Rance, and Mara Zampieri as Minnie sings with fine, clear focus with no suspicion of a wobble.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition *** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
