Nationality: American

Born in Wisconsin in 1952, Jane Henschel studied at the University of Southern Carolina before relocating to Germany, which has remained her base throughout her international career. Endowed with a big, bright dramatic mezzo with a contralto-like lower register, she is in demand for roles including Wagner’s Ortrud, Fricka and Brangaene, Janáček’s Kostelnicka and Kabanicha, Verdi’s Ulrica and Mistress Quickly (which she sings on Sir Colin Davis’s Grammy-winning 2004 recording of Falstaff), and especially Die Amme in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten.

Henschel’s discography includes Mrs Grose on Daniel Harding’s recording of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with Sir Simon Rattle, The Witch on Sir Charles Mackerras’s English-language recording of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel on Chandos, and Mary on Andris Nelsons’s 2014 recording of [d[]eDer fliegende Hollander with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
