Bach, J S: | St John Passion, BWV245 (excerpts) sung in English with Simon Preston (organ) | Croft: | The Burial Service Recorded in procession | Gibbons, O: | Drop, drop, slow tears | Haydn: | Mass, Hob. XXII:11 in D minor 'Nelsonmesse' Sylvia Stahlman, Helen Watts, Wilfred Brown, Tom Krause with the London Symphony Orchestra | Tallis: | Glory to thee, my God, this night ed. Ken |
“What is very obvious is the vigour and general sense of responsiveness to the music from choir, orchestra and soloists. Sylvia Stahlman in the important soprano part sings with a mixture of firmness and agility as the part demands. It is good to have these recordings from what was very much a vintage period for the King’s College Choir...the inclusion of the Croft is one of the main attractions of the present disc” MusicWeb International, January 2013 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Karl Münchinger recorded all the major orchestral and choral pieces by Bach for Decca, and over a period of some 30 years (from the Mono to the Digital eras), five of the Cantatas. All boast remarkable soloists from their eras. Suzanne Danco sings the two solo cantatas, BWV 51 and 202, recorded in 1953 and released on CD for the first time. Elly Ameling and Helen Watts are soloists in the early cantata, BWV 10. And the digital recordings of Ein feste Burg and Wachet auf feature Julia Hamari and Tom Krause. The collection is rounded off with two of the most popular orchestral arrangements from the Bach cantata repertoire – Jesu, joy of man’s desiring and Sheep may safely graze. “Fascinating to chart Munchinger's development as a Bach conductor over 30 years - from the early stiffness of BWV 202 to the surefooted majesty of Ein' feste Burg.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2012 *** “Suzanne Danco’s lively and musicianly performances in both Cantatas gave me much pleasure” Gramophone Magazine “The smoothest and sweetest of string playing” Gramophone Magazine (Jesu, joy of man’s desiring, Sheep may safely graze) “excellently transparent and well-detailed Decca digital recording and a fine team of soloists … the chorus’ vigorous contribution is given striking body and presence” Gramophone Magazine (BWV 80 and 140) “very well performed” Penguin Guide *** (Cantata BWV 10) | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Gilbert & Sullivan: The Gondoliers & Cello Concerto
Sullivan, A: | The Gondoliers (No dialogue) Sir Geraint Evans (Duke of Plaza-Toro), Monica Sinclair (Duchess of Plaza-Toro), Elsie Morison (Giannetta), Marjorie Thomas (Tessa), Richard Lewis (Marco), John Cameron (Giuseppe), Edna Graham (Casilda), Alexander Young (Luiz/Francesco), Owen Brannigan (Grand Inquisitor), Helen Watts (Giulia/Inez), Lavinia Renton (Vittoria), Stella Hitchens (Fiammetta) with Glyndebourne Chorus Cello Concerto in D Julian Lloyd Webber (cello) |
Even Queen Victoria declared herself amused by The Gondoliers, a work of irresistibly sunny exuberance. As Gilbert wrote to Sullivan: “It gives one the chance of shining through the twentieth century [and beyond!] with a reflected light.” Though set in Venice, the operetta satirises both the snobbery and growing republicanism of 1880s Britain in a delicious imbroglio centred on two gondolier brothers who unexpectedly become joint rulers of the kingdom of Barataria. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Bach composed this Lutheran Missa in 1733. It later became part of his only missa tota, the Mass in B minor. “A refreshing antidote to the quirky tempos and minimalist approach of some more recent offerings. Solo voices and instrumentalists are excellent. Choruses are more diffuse, with 'Cum sancto spiritu' rather ponderous.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2009 *** “admirable performance and excellent recording … all Bach-lovers must know Harnoncourt's style by now; the buoyant flow of the opening Kyrie, for example, the springy rhythms and lightness of touch.” Gramophone Magazine | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Choruses are often woolly, soloists vary from off-the-voice big voices to insecure, boyish sounds.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2009 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
