| | | Verona - Live
Leo Nucci, Ghena Dimitrova, Peter Dvorsky, Sona Ghazarian, Giacomo Aragall, Ruggero Raimondi, Elena Obraztsova, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Natalia Troitskaya, Luca Canonici, Montserrat Caballé, Placido Domingo, Samuel Ramey, Aprile Millo, Vincenzo La Scola, Mara Zampieri, René Kollo, Silvano Carolli, Eva Marton, Juan Pons, Antonio Ordonez, Ileana Cotrubas & José Carreras Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid, José Collado, Carlo Franci Montserrat Caballé, Samuel Ramey, Ileana Cotrubas, René Kollo, Eva Marton, and Ruggero Raimondi were amongst the many opera stars from all over the world who came together at the great Arena in Verona on 8th August 1988 to support José Carreras and the establishment of his foundation to fight leukaemia. The much-loved tenor had recently recovered from this life threatening illness and the recordings included in this special two-CD set are the aural documents of this memorable gala. Although Placido Domingo was unable to take part that evening, he too supported his friend, providing a recording of a song by zarzuela composer Jacinto Guerrero at Carreras’s disposal for the concert in aid of foundation and this album. The discs include highlights from La Bohème, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Manon Lescaut, La Giaconda, Otello, La Traviata and many other operas. August 8th, 1988 was a great evening for José Carreras. It went on until after two o’clock in the morning, but the packed audience in the Arena in Verona did not want to go yet. They held aloft signs and banners on which they hailed the singer, who had returned to life, with heartfelt words in many languages. He was the last to perform after the greats of opera had sung for him throughout the evening. For the first time since his convalescence Carreras again stood in front of an orchestra. His strength was only sufficient for a single song - Lara’s Granada - with which his voice could outshine the waves of the instruments. “This Verona concert featuring more than 20 opera stars in showpiece arias celebrated Carreras's return to performing following his recovery from leukaemia.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 **** | | | (also available to download from $21.75) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. Ferruccio Furlanetto (Mefistofele (Mephistopheles)), Giuseppe Filianoti (Faust, a scholar), Dimitra Theodossiou (Margherita / Elena (Helen of Troy)), Sonia Zaramella (Marta, Margherita’s neighbour), Mimmo Ghegghi (Wagner, Faust’s pupil / Nereo) & Monica Minarelli (Pantalis, Elena’s companion) Orchestra, Chorus and Children’s Chorus of Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Stefano Ranzani Gifted as both a writer and a musician, Arrigo Boito wrote the libretto to his own opera Mefistofele. Based on Goethe’s Faust and the eternal struggle between Good and Evil, Mefistofele is the pinnacle of Boito’s compositional achievement and has retained a place in the operatic repertoire. “Stefano Ranzani upholds the energy in the swift-moving sections...He contributes well to the tension and responds to the different speeds, from rapid chorus to inward-looking aria. Everything benefits from an extremely fine recording. I find it one of the best versions on disc.” International Record Review, July/August 2011 | | | (also available to download from $11.25) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Profil are delighted to be able to present another new CD featuring Semyon Bychkov. Verdi’s Requiem was written after the big success of Aida. With his requiem, Verdi ventured into unfamiliar territory, having little previous experience with sacred music. “Bychkov's idiomatic interpretation flows well, never freezing up, as some do, in the slowest passages. He also avoids false theatrics, finding instead an inner vitality that motivates the Sanctus with energy.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 **** “On this fine new Cologne recording, Semyon Bychkov deploys two specialist German radio choirs shrewdly intermixed with the chorus of Turin's Teatro Regio. If Bychkov's reading doesn't quite burn white in the Dies irae as Fricsay's did, or Toscanini's, it is nonetheless a supremely well directed Requiem, scrupulously observed, meticulously prepared, vivid, lucid, forward-moving. If there's a reservation, it is that the recorded balance occasionally has one straining to hear how good the choral work actually is. Olga Borodina is an eloquent exponent of the mezzo-soprano role, well matched to her younger colleague, herself an erstwhile mezzo. What Urmana's voice lacks in evenness in legato passages is more than made up for by her command of the spinto manner, the drama of the text vividly purveyed. Ferruccio Furlanetto, now in his 59th year, has lost none of his mastery of the legato style. He brings an authentically Italianate feel to the music, as does bel canto specialist Ramón Vargas, here at his eloquent best. Verdi's Requiem can seem a somewhat self-regarding piece, not least when 'great interpreters' get hold of it. This reading, for all its distinction, gives itself no airs.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “…a supremely well directed Requiem, scrupulously observed, meticulously prepared, vivid, lucid, forward-moving. Borodina… is an eloquent exponent of the mezzo-soprano role… what Urmana's voice lacks in evenness in legato passages is more than made up for by her command of the spinto manner, the drama of the text vividly purveyed. Ferruccio Furlanetto... brings an authentically Italianate feel to the music, as does bel canto specialist Ramón Vargas, here at his eloquent best.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2008 “Soprano Violeta Urmana, mezzo Olga Borodina, tenor Ramon Vargas and bass Ferruccio Furlanetto all have their moments, but its the orchestra and German choirs who fuel the impassioned frenzy between passages of the most eloquent reflection. If you like your Verdi hot and spicy, this is for you.” The Guardian, 12th October 2008 | | | (also available to download from $21.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Ferruccio Furlanetto (Attila), Dimitra Theodossiou (Odabella), Alberto Gazale (Ezio), Carlo Ventre (Foresto), Alessandro Cosentino (Uldino), Daniele Tonini (Leone) Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Verdi of Trieste, Donato Renzetti This edition of Attila is based on the extraordinarily successful performances of the opera given at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste last year. The towering figure of the barbarian king Attila, masterfully crafted by Verdi in one of his most efficacious bass roles, finds in Ferruccio Furlanetto a performer of matchless vocal bravura and expressive sensitivity. The Italian bass is partnered by the noble voice of the soprano Dimitra Theodossiou, who has already appeared in leading roles in Anna Bolena and Stiffelio, and the orchestra is conducted by Donato Renzetti, unquestionably one of the most prestigious Italian conductors and a well-known specialist of nineteenth-century Italian opera. | | | (also available to download from $21.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
