American mezzo Michelle DeYoung was born in Michigan in 1968 and trained on the Lindemann Young Artists Program at the Metropolitan Opera; early competition successes included the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1992 and the Marian Anderson Award three years later. She is particularly associated with Mahler, Judit in Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, and Wagner’s Fricka, Brangaene, Waltraute and Sieglinde.

DeYoung’s discography includes Didon on Sir Colin Davis’s landmark 2000 recording of Berlioz’s Les Troyens on LSO Live, Kundry on Marek Janowski’s Pentatone Parsifal, a ‘wonderfully alive’ (Opera Magazine) Judit opposite John Tomlinson’s Bluebeard with Esa-Pekka Salonen, Fricka and Waltraute on Jaap van Zweden’s Ring Cycle with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Mahler’s Third Symphony and Kindertotenlieder with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (which won Classical Album of the Year at the 2003 Grammy Awards).
