Rodrigo: Overture

Handel arrived in Hamburg in 1703, aged eighteen. He spent four years in the city and wrote several works for the town’s opera house. Hamburg opera was a rather eclectic beast at the time, drawing on Italian and French language and instrumental style alongside the native German. Handel fell happily into this genre; this recording brings together a selection of the delightful orchestral music (which tends to be in the French style) that Handel wrote there, some of it recorded for the first time.

This marvellous live recording by the Academy of Ancient Music was captured at Wigmore Hall and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

The Academy of Ancient Music is Britain’s leading period ensemble and this superb recording does everything to justify this status. The recital includes brilliant performances by soloists Pavlo Beznosiuk, Rachel Podger and Frank de Bruine.

“The degree of passion, excitement and joy stirred by this concert was surely exceptional” The Times

“…scrappy moments but the zesty interaction of the AAM's players in two of Handel's Op 6 Concerti grossi is unflaggingly alert, playful and dramatic. Frank de Bruine's poetic oboe is attractively matched with Rachel Podger's articulate solos in Vivaldi's Concerto B flat for oboe and violin. Podger's and Beznosiuk's virile violin duels reach their zenith in a finely crafted performance of Bach's Double Violin Concerto: the central Largo ma non tanto is sensitively drawn and the concluding Allegro is among the most thrilling I have encountered.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2006
