Nino Machaidze’s new recording for Sony Classical, “Arias & Scenes”, looks further ahead to the new roles she will sing in the future. Machaidze is joined by Orchestre national de France and their resident Maestro Daniele Gatti.

French repertoire has become a major part of Machaidze’s career and is represented in this recital with arias by Massenet, Bizet and Ambroise Thomas. Machaidze debuted the role of Thaïs last year alongside Plácido Domingo in the lead role of Athanaël in Seville. She will debut at the Vienna State Opera this June in the role of Juliette with Plácido Domingo conducting and Piotr Beczala as Roméo.

Since her momentous breakthrough replacing Anna Netrebko as Juliette alongside Rolando Villazon’s Roméo in Salzburg’s 2008 production of Roméo et Juliette (Gounod), Nino’s career has taken off.

In an astonishingly short amount of time she debuted at many of the world’s major opera houses, in the lead heroine-roles alongside some of the greatest singers of our time, including Plácido Domingo (Thaïs) , Vittorio Grigolo (Roméo et Juliette at both La Scala and LA Opera) and Juan-Diego Flórez (I Puritani) among others.

Gounod: Roméo et Juliette

Filmed in High Definition at the Verona Arena, 08/2011

Lighting PAOLO MAZZON

Here from the iconic Verona arena is Charles Gounod’s masterpiece Roméo & Juliette, performed there for the first time since 1977. This new production was entrusted to Italian director Francesco Micheli, making his arena debut, who opted for a personal, highly original version: “An arena within the Arena, like a blood-red Elizabethan theatre. A senescent world that will not let its own children live.”

Juliette is sung by Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze, in a return to one of her early roles at the Salzburg Festival. Stefano Secco, often heard at the Opéra Bastille in Paris and other international venues, is Roméo. Artur Rucinski interprets Mercutio, Romeo’s friend and the rival of Jean-François Borras’s Tybalt. The page Stéphano is sung by soprano Ketevan Kemoklidze. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Arena di Verona are conducted by Fabio Mastrangelo.

“[Machaidze] seems to be the Juliette of choice today and this video makes clear why that's the case: lovely singing and a demeanour that manages to be sensual and innocent at once. Secco's voice may be a tad light for Romeo if heard live, but with microphone placement being what it is, he's excellent in the role...Mastrangelo leads a big-boned, arena-sized performance, full of excitement and tension.” International Record Review, September 2012

Nino Machaidze (soprano)

Bologna Teatro Comunale Orchestra, Michele Mariotti

Nino Machaidze is one of today’s fastest rising young opera stars. At only age 25, the Georgian Soprano entered the international opera circuit with a spectacular debut at the 2008 Salzburg Festival replacing Anna Netrebko as Juliette in a new production of Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette" alongside tenor superstar Rolando Villazón. Her electric performance was greatly received by both the audience and the press ("A Juliette to Cherish" Opera News; “The discovery of the 2008 Salzburg Festival” Crescendo). In just three short years, Nino Machaidze has followed up her Salzburg debut with leading role debuts at the world's top opera houses, culminating in her New York Metropolitan Opera debut this January, where she received standing ovations.

For her first Sony Classical recording "Romantic Arias" Nino has made a selection of the greatest bel canto and lyric roles. The disc features both arias from her career defining roles, as well as some new additions to her repertoire.

“Machaidze tears into roles with an energy that leaves the listener breathless. She produces a top note that would kill at half a mile to silence the chorus in the closing pages of 'Ah! Non giunge' from La Sonnambula. While Machaidze's tone occasionally may be uneven...you have to admire her finely honed technique. This is a voice that has been scrupulously prepared and the hard work shows” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ***

“her nuanced phrasing is a wonder to behold...this album clearly underlines her star qualities and points towards majestic things to come.” Classic FM Magazine, October 2011 ****

“Hers is one of the bigger voices on the bel canto circuit. Her theatrical intelligence is also promising: though her language articulation isn't great, she vividly projects the emotional content. Most obviously, the middle section of "Ah! Je veux vivre" from Romeo et Juliette takes on unusual gravity, revealing a character who defies family and mortality for love.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011

“Machaidze begins with Manon's farewell to her table, to which she brings sensitivity...[in Salut a France] Machaidze expands her tone in exultation, tossing off the roulades with vocal bravura and crowning the cabaletta with a secure and ringing final note. This is one of the best tracks in the programme, as is 'O luce di quest' anima'” International Record Review, October 2011

Giordano, U: Fedora

Giordano, U: Fedora

Angela Gheorghiu (Fedora), Nino Machaidze (Olga Sukarev), Plácido Domingo (Loris Ipanov), Fabio Maria Capitanucci (De Siriex)

Orchestre symphonique et choers de la Monnaie, Alberto Veronesi

Fedora is an opera in three acts by Umberto Giordano set to an Italian libretto by Arturo Colautti and based on the play Fédora by Victorien Sardou. It is one of the most notable works of Giordano. The Opera has seen a resurgence in recent years, for example, with this stunning recording by two of the world’s greatest ever opera singers, Placido Domingo and Angela Gheorghiu.

“Both [Domingo and Gheorghiu] give highly assured and vividly characterised performances...[they] sing with the requisite ardour and commitment, stirring up a storm in the long final duet...Alberto Veronesi’s conducting keeps crashing vulgarity at bay. Those who like this sort of thing will like this very much indeed.” The Telegraph, 3rd February 2011 ****

“[Domingo] has plenty of heart, a key ingredient in a part whose dramatic requirements are few apart from appearing ardent, unfortunate, and misunderstood. Backed by stage experience in the opera, Domingo conveys these qualities easily...Veronesi, with the orchestra and chorus of La Monnaie in Brussels, lavishes affection on Giordano’s score” The Times, 14th January 2011 ***

“Fedora herself is the crux of the opera, and Angela Gheorghiu brings the full weight of her imposing, aloof delivery to the role.” The Independent, 21st January 2011 ***

“the refulgence [of Domingo's tone] is heart-warming. One is constantly having cause to revise, or to regard as incomplete, any written estimate of Domingo's career as a singer, and here is another instance...The generous provision of small parts is made the most of, and recorded sound is clear and spacious.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2011

“[Domingo] communicates splendid dramatic involvement throughout his performance here...both charm and white-hot passion are required, and in neither department is Domingo lacking...the middle voice remains as burnished as ever...The Monnaie orchestra plays with great beauty and accomplishment under Alberto Veronesi.” International Record Review, March 2011

“[Domingo] sings with tremendous refinement” The Guardian, 10th February 2011 ***

“Domingo is simply phenomenal, given that he turned 67 the month the recording was made, sounding ardent if sometimes, not surprisingly, vocally pressed. There are fine performances in secondary roles...and impressively idiomatic conducting by Alberto Veronesi.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2011 ***

“in Angela Gheorghiu [the title-role] gets an interpreter of impeccable vocal beauty and dramatic power...the luminous and mysterious glow of [Domingo's] voice is no longer what it was, but he more than compensates with irresistable passion, dramatic weight and still-super-secure top notes.” Classic FM Magazine, April 2011 ****

Orchestra e coro del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Michele Mariotti

In this high-definition film of Bellini’s historical bel-canto drama, “I Puritani”, tenor superstar Juan Diego Flórez is partnered by new young Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze, in her first appearance on Decca DVD. Joining them in a striking new staging by Pier’Alli at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna is celebrated bass baritone, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo. The context is England’s Civil War between the Roundheads (the Parliamentarians, or Puritans of the title) and the Cavaliers (Royalists). A love triangle between Arturo (a Puritan), Riccardo (a Royalist) and the beautiful Elvira results in a drama of escapes, disguises and captures, during which Elvira loses her reason, before a final pardon restores her senses and unites her with her beloved Arturo. This new production benefits from the use of a new critical addition, with significant added material.
