Pierre Boulez is an icon of today’s classical scene and closely associated with the works of Mahler. Featuring the acclaimed Vienna Philharmonic and the chorus of the Vienna State Opera – historically connected to Mahler, Berg and Boulez. These performances were recorded live at the opening concert of the prestigious Salzburg Festival in 2011, conceived as a tribute to Gustav Mahler, and will be released to coincide with the maestro’s 88th birthday in March. Mahler’s 2-act Das Klagende Lied is a mythical tale of fratricide, guilt and retribution, based on stories by the Grimm brothers and Ludwig Bechstein. “[the Mahler's] its brightly lit orchestral effects have always brought the best out of his conducting; the performance has both spaciousness and finely focused detail...The Lulu Suite is even more remarkable, for there's an emotional breadth to Boulez's approach now that just wasn't there in his earlier, pioneering performances. His balance between rigour and expressiveness exactly mirrors Berg's music” The Guardian, 14th March 2013 **** “This new performance...is remarkable for its transparency, but Boulez has added actual drama to his mastery of Mahler's early orchestration...There's real atmosphere here...The choir, perfectly trained and singing with impeccable diction and attention to dynamics, cannot be praised highly enough. The Lulu-Suite that follows receives a marvellous reading as well...this new Boulez is a major entry.” International Record Review, May 2013 “Boulez is a splendid guide to both these scores and if you don’t mind having a foreshortened account of Das klagende Lied this disc is a compelling proposition.” MusicWeb International, 28th May 2013 |

The production was revived in 2012 and here he completes the trio with two new productions of Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica. Antonio Pappano conducts an acclaimed cast including Eva-Maria Westbroek, Ermonela Jaho, Lucio Gallo, Elena Zilio and rising star Francesco Demuro. These three one-act works were broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and went to cinemas world-wide in February 2012. Running time: 180 minutes Subtitles: EN/FR/DE/ES Sound format: 2.0LPCM + 5.1(5.0) DTS “a triumph...three wonderfully directed and expertly acted productions. Add in Pappano's impeccable conducting and his valuable introductions to the pieces, and you have a nigh-on ideal Trittico.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 ***** “In the theatre, Suor Angelica packed a stronger punch [than Il Tabarro]. Here, on DVD, it is little short of devastating...Jaho's youthful vulnerability is deeply moving...Gianni Schicchi is a wicked 1960s delight...Outstandingly filmed, this set marks a high point for live opera on DVD...I have no hesitation in making this new Trittico the top recommendation.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2012 “Pappano draws consistently fine playing from the orchestra...Gallo is in very good from as Michele...Westbroek gives her all in Giorgetta's contrasting scenes...Jaho dominates [Suor Angelica], of course, and in a role which she had never sung before...Gallo exhibits his facility for comic roles [in Schicchi]...One will have to look far to find a better trio of performances than these” International Record Review, September 2012 BBC Music Magazine

"an inexorable force that seemed to come from nowhere but infact had been cleverly prepared for. This is the kind of work that reveals the LSO itself as a real community of an orchestra, a collection of talented individuals responding to Mahler's every solo opportunity but dedicated to a common cause" Daily Telegraph concert review "the LSO was all power and perspiration, muscle and machismo. Even in the radiant, hymn-like final movement Gergiev found (and seized upon) hidden storms and stresses" The Times concert review “I've never heard the opening Pan Awakes music more marvellously vivid in all its miraculous scoring, every dynamic in place, the snarl of the trombones, the menace of the trumpets ... you won't hear more brilliant playing than the LSO's” Sunday Times “The first and third movements climax in a dash to the finishing-line that has one pinned to one's seat. The finale has an immediacy and machismo you may or may not find at odds with its elevated spiritual character.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2009 “intensely theatrical...The sharp dynamic contrasts are well brought out in the first movement, with all the colourful woodwind writing well highlighted and pointed...[Larsson] is very expressive and beautifully supported by the orchestra.” Penguin Guide, 2010 **/* | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

She deals idiomatically with Strauss's long phrases and points the text well…” BBC Music Magazine, October 2005 “Fleming copes beautifully with the high tessitura of the role, and produces her clearest, brightest tone...with bright, cleanly focused sound backing Bychkov's urgent and sensuous reading, the result is very convincing” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition **** “As Daphne, Fleming soared” The Independent on Sunday, 21st March 2004 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Live from Caracas
This could well be the most ambitious recording of any Mahler symphony ever and a once-in-a-generation classical event and an unforgettable night for the city of Caracas. This truly unique account of Mahler’s most extraordinary symphony is part of Gustavo Dudamel's planned Mahler cycle, this time featuring BOTH orchestras with which he is most closely associated - the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, who have both played acclaimed Mahler concerts with Maestro Dudamel in the US and in Venezuela. The performance also features an immense vocal force including a massed choir of young Venezuelan voices and a line-up of international soloists. The performance was seen in hundreds of theaters in the United States and Canada, as well as those in Brazil, Colombia and Argentina. In Venezuela, it aired on the state television channel, Tves, to mass audiences. This special DVD and Blu-Ray will be released to coincide with the Opening Concert of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra season in September 2012. Extra Material: 17 minutes documentary on the DVD and Blu-Ray which gives a unique insight into this world-beating Mahler recording. “an excellent rendition of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony...featuring a fine partnership of orchestras and a variable lineup of soloists...Of particular note is the huge choir, which included some 1,200 children from Venezuela’s remarkable system of youth choruses.” New York Times, 23rd November 2012 “This Symphony of much more than a thousand...maximises the advantages of group spirit and minimises the problems of monstrosity. The beginning, middle and end of Mahler's first movement hymn to the creator spirit blaze with unsurpassable, open-toned fervour...I guess it's the fervent-toned Simon Bolivar strings who bring true intensity to the tremolos and heart to the soarings.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 **** BBC Music Magazine
