With this recording, Herbert Blomstedt pays homage to Bach and the city of Leipzig. One part of the Blu-ray Disc was recorded in 2005 at the Leipzig Bach Festival, which is widely regarded as the world’s leading festival celebrating Johann Sebastian Bach. This concert of Bach’s masterwork, written at the end of his tenure as the 18th Gewandhauskapellmeister did not really mark the end of Blomstedt’s fruitful collaboration with the traditional orchestra. The Swedish conductor will continue to act as an honorary musical director to the ensemble. Performed with leading Bach singers at St. Thomas’ Church, Leipzig, the church for which Bach conceived his works, this homage to Bach was a touching farewell to Herbert Blomstedt from his Leipzig audience. J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor is one of the greatest and most famous works of sacred music. The other part of the Blu-ray Disc was recorded at the 9th October Memorial Concert of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Thomanerchores. These began with the "Monday demonstration" of 9 October 1989, just one month before the fall of the Berlin wall. Bonus: Bach and his B minor Mass – An introduction by Herbert Blomstedt. | | | Recorded live at the Concert Hall of the Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne, 21 August 2003
Claudio Abbado has realised a dream with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The orchestra, an exclusive ensemble of handpicked musicial stars, opens up new dimensions in the interpretation of symphonic music with exceptional soloists. The line-up includes such luminaries as Ilya Gringolts and Sabine and Wolfgang Meyer, alongside members of the world’s great orchestras. The cellos section alone boasts Natalia Gutman, Clemens Hagen and Valentin Erben. Claudio Abbado is undeniably a supreme Mahler conductor and his best selling recordings with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra – symphonies No. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 have already been released on EuroArts – the symphonies have set new standards in interpretation of works by Gustav Mahler. “It’s different having best friends together. Everyone is there to enjoy making music, to take pleasure, to play with enthusiasm, with passion. They are prepared to do any crazy thing I ask them for the sake of the music. To fly, to walk through fire.” Claudio Abbado Picture format BD: 1080i Full HD - 16:9 Sounds formats BD: PCM 2.0, DTS HD Master Audio Region code: All Subtitles: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian Booklet Notes: English, German, French Running time: 86 mins FSK: 0 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

The best-selling Medici Arts DVD on the label now released on Blu-ray Disc. 1080i 16:9, PCM 2.0; PCM 5.1 Subtitles: German, English, French, Spanish 102 mins all audiences (FSK 0) "It’s different having best friends together. Everyone is there to enjoy making music, to take pleasure, to play with enthusiasm, with passion. They are prepared to do any crazy thing I ask them for the sake of the music. To fly, to walk through fire." (Claudio Abbado) “One of the greatest Mahlerians alive today, Abbado conducting Mahler's Third Symphony with his own Lucerne Festival Orchestra is not to be missed. Whether you enjoy watching concerts on DVD is a matter largely of personal taste, but those wanting a close-up on Abbado's elegant fingers won't be disappointed. Mahler's Third charts a journey to transcendence from the origins of life - given primordial terror by the LFO brass, every solo amid the immaculate ensemble sound cherished with Abbado's grasp of overarching Mahlerian narrative. Anna Larsson is ethereal in the fourth movement's Nietzschian text, the finale a sublimely convincing interpretation of the transcendence of love.” The Times, 16th August 2008 “Mahler three of peerless concentration and shape. ...Claudio Abbado never forces the expressivity of the superband Lucerne Festival Orchestra; yet every colour and texture shines through. …the filming of the orchestra is faultless.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 ***** “Abbado draws a reading of such commitment, technical polish and interpretative acuity - wondrously linear and yet emotionally true, without a shred of vulgarity - that you can only marvel at Mahler's musical-metaphysical vision and Abbado's sensitive shaping of it.” Financial Times “This truly is a genuine archive treasure” Classic FM Magazine “Abbado's performance of this work at last year's Proms was the highlight of the season: all the reviewers were unanimous. Illness prevented him from then conducting it in New York (Boulez took over) but now we can see the 2007 Lucerne concert performance and marvel at its comprehensiveness and refinement. This really is the world's greatest chamber group, as Abbado intended it to be!” Hi-Fi News | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Scenery combines dazzlingly mobile 3D computer projections on a towering cyclorama, with groups of acrobats. Inevitably some imagery works better than others; the harpyish Rhinemaidens, literally giving birth to the gold, are less compelling than the planetary descent to Nibelheim, or Walküre's opening wolf-chase and gleaming Tree, in which Wotan's ravens perch, and which scatters Siegmund's name like falling leaves. Against these amazing backgrounds the Gods, futuristically costumed, glide high above the stage on individual gantries propelled by 'invisible' stagehands... they're no barrier to keenly dramatic, involving performances from a fine cast, with some superb principals. ...it's all beautifully recorded on DVD - but on Blu-ray it's simply breathtaking, pin-sharp images and airy surround-sound drawing one into the Valencia stage with almost 3D effect. Wagner still responds best to Romantic imagery; but this redefines it on a cosmic scale. It's the finest Ring on video so far.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2010 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
