Camilla Nylund (soprano)

After the sensational success of his debut album ‘Helden’ (Heroes), Germany´s leading Wagner tenor - Klaus Florian Vogt - presents his first all-Wagner arias CD.

The album presents arias from the Wagner operas Mr Vogt has sung at famous opera houses around the world, including ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’, ‘Lohengrin’ (being his breakthrough success and most famous role at the Bayreuth Wagner festival), ‘Parsifal’ (new production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin 2012), ‘Walküre’ (new production of the ‘Ring des Nibelungen’ at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich).

The CD also includes roles Vogt has not sung before on stage, such as ‘Rienzi’ and ‘Tristan and Isolde’. Vogt is accompanied here by the acclaimed Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jonathan Nott.

Klaus Florian Vogt sings in all major opera houses around the world. In 2013, he will star in a new production in Milan (‘The Flying Dutchman’) and will also perform at the opera houses in Barcelona (‘Rusalka’), Tokyo (‘The Mastersingers of Nuremberg’), Berlin (‘Lohengrin’), Munich (‘The Flying Dutchman’ & ‘Lohengrin’), Hamburg (‘The Mastersingers of Nuremberg’) and Helsinki (‘The Dead City’). He will also be on stage in Bayreuth in 2013.

Mr Vogt received the prestigious German Echo ‘Singer of the Year’ Award in 2012 for the ‘Helden’ CD.

“…the timbre rewards the ear with its clarity, youthfulness and affecting sweetness” International Record Review on ‘Helden’

“…delightful, fleet nimbleness…” The Independent on ‘Helden’

“On this disc, he sings things he would never perform in the theatre, his obvious characteristic being an ethereal quality ideally suited to Lohengrin. It casts new light on Walther in Meistersinger and on Parsifal, though there his resources are stretched to the limit...Jonathan Nott seems to be a remarkable Wagner conductor.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2013 ****

“There is no lack of intelligence, sensitivity or preparation but of the requisite tessitura and sound quality...But the successes, where Vogt's voice works well with the music, are genuine...[in Lohengrin's farewell] Vogt is able to harness the (apt) wide-eyed innocence of his vocal delivery...to the dramatic situation.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2013

“In the prayer from Rienzi Vogt is very good indeed, with the flexibility to manoeuvre his way around the sometimes delicate filigree of the vocal writing...Nott faithfully follows the dictates of the music in these small-scale performances, and the orchestra plays well for him” MusicWeb International, 29th April 2013

“though possessing an undoubted princely nobility and boyish enthusiasm well suited to the younger roles, Vogt sounds thin and strained in places...his performance seems most effective when allied to the foil of Camilla Nylund's soprano” The Independent, 22nd February 2013

Wagner: Lohengrin

Wagner: Lohengrin

Recorded live at the Bayreuth Festival, August 2011

Klaus Florian Vogt (Lohengrin), Annette Dasch (Elsa Von Brabant), Petra Lang (Ortrud), Jukka Rasilainen (Friedrich Von Telramund), Georg Zeppenfeld (König Heinrich), Samuel Youn (Der Heerrufer Des Königs)

Bayreuth Festival Orchestra & Chorus, Andris Nelsons (conductor) & Hans Neuenfels (director)

Hans Neuenfels’s striking new production of Wagner’s fairytale opera gives this medieval story of doomed love and sorcery the Bayreuth treatment. As controversial as it is stimulating, this production was the talk of the 2011 Festival, and showcases a new generation of Wagnerian singing talent including soprano Annette Dasch and tenor Klaus Florian Vogt.

Running time: 84 minutes

Subtitles: EN/FR/DE/ES

Sound format: 2.0LPCM + 5.1(5.0) DTS

“If the recording of the live performance had been on CD, I would have been mainly enthusiastic. Andris Nelsons is the most promising Wagner conductor I have heard for a long time, and his account of this glowing, radiant score is broad. The singing is good, too, with a lovely Elsa from Annette Dasch, and a Lohengrin who has magnificent moments.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 **

“This is a rather special Lohengrin...the spacious Bayreuth sound is moulded with exceptional tonal refinement and richness of colour...Vogt has more than enough stamina and vocal authority to sustain the role. All six solo singers are musically excellent and dramatically persuasive, with Petra Lang's excoriating Ortrud and Georg Zeppenfeld's grave yet warm-toned King Henry particularly memorable...The general air of conviction owes much to the excellent cinematography” Gramophone Magazine, October 2012

Klaus Florian Vogt (tenor)

Orchestra of Deutsche Oper Berlin, Peter Schneider

Klaus Florian Vogt is Bayreuth´s leading tenor – he has a unique voice, perfect technique and last but not least the perfect look for a leading man in the works of Wagner.

He had a triumphant breakthrough success as "Lohengrin" at the world famous Bayreuth Wagner festival in the Summer of 2011. Major media acclaimed his singing as "the third wonder of Bayreuth" and the "...best Lohengrin ever".

Klaus Florian Vogt sings in all major opera houses of the world. In 2012, he will star in new productions in Tokyo (Lohengrin), Munich (Valkyrie) and Barcelona (Florentine Tragedy). He will also feature in roles at Bayreuth.

Helden ("Heroes") is Vogt´s first album for Sony Classical, where he is exclusively signed, and is his first recital recording. The CD shows major pieces linked with him, of course Wagner and the famous "Grahlserzählung" in Lohengrin, but there are also beautiful arias by Weber, Flotow, Korngold and Lortzing – and last not least also by Mozart.

“Vogt has an attractive if slender voice, and for him to sing on this album called Heroes seems a bit odd, since he is more suited to tender regrets than to thrilling outbursts of tone. He shows a Lieder singer's sensitivity to words, and is almost ideally suited to Lohengrin's narration, perhaps the high-point of his recital.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 ***

“[Vogt] offers the gentlest presentation of [Siegmund's] music that I've heard, and notably touching it is. He impresses even more with Lohengrin's narrative, where stage experience pays dividends...Vogt phrases exquisitely, and though the gentleness of sound is again evident, the strength of the character's convictions throughout is clear.” International Record Review, July/August 2012

“his Siegmund, naive and ecstatic rather than virile and forceful, is striking. Vogt's vocal ease and cleanness of line is appealing in Weber and Wagner, and he proves an accomplished, elegant Mozartian.” The Guardian, 12th April 2012 ***

Mussorgsky: Khovanshchina

Mussorgsky: Khovanshchina

Recorded live at the Nationaltheater, Munich, 10 & 14 July 2007

Paata Burchuladze (Ivan Khovansky), Anatoly Kotscherga (Dosifey), Camilla Nylund (Emma), Doris Soffel (Marfa), Klaus Florian Vogt (Andrey Khovansky) & John Daszak (Vasily Golitsin)

Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Kent Nagano

Staged, directed and designed by Dmitri Tcherniakov

Kent Nagano superbly masters the challenges presented by this score, shapes the dynamics with subtle intensity, and casts the score in a mellow glow.

As Marfa, the spurned lover of Ivan Khovansky‘s son Andrei, Doris Soffel unfolds such a rich palette of sonorities, from the pathos of the lower ranges to shaded distant heights, that “one is tempted to speak of a Russian mezzo”.

Fantastic cast: Anatoly Kotscherga portrays the religious leader Dosifei with fervor and bluster, Klaus Florian Vogt dazzles heroically as Andrey, John Daszak is a technically flawless Golitsin, and bass-baritone Paata Burchuladze gives a charismatic, forceful account of Prince Ivan Khovansky.

The final chorus, which Mussorgsky did not compose, is played in the orchestrally transparent version of Igor Stravinsky – the third great Russian composer who contributed to making “Khovanshchina“ a gripping stage work for all times.

With his stripped-down sets and historicizing costumes, director Dmitri Tcherniakov, one of the new voices of contemporary Russian theater, builds a bridge to the political present.

Bayreuth's incomparable chorus really deserves a medal for its performance here.” International Record Review, September 2012

Frankfurter Opern-und Museumsorchester & Chorus and Children‘s Chorus of the Frankfurt Opera, Sebastian Weigle

Die Tote Stadt, written in 1920 was Korngold’s first and most successful opera.

This is part of the OehmsClassics Live CD series with Frankfurt Opera and provides the opportunity to hear a musically and technically flawless performance.

“The Frankfurt performance has great depth and resonance. This is another faultlessly cast production with some outstanding singing from the lyric tenor Klaus Florian Vogt and the dramatic soprano Hedwig Fassbender. Their vivid word-painting and turn of phrase rivets the attention, with the orchestra led by Sebastian Weigle throwing themselves heart and soul into Korngold's score.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011

“For Klaus Florian Vogt’s achievement alone this set is worth acquiring, whatever the merits of the rest of the cast. Those merits are considerable...Tatiana Pavlovskaya, after a somewhat shaky start, is superb...The playing is fresh and colourful, tempos are well chosen and the balance, often so problematic in live recordings, is everything one could wish.” MusicWeb International, December 2012

In 2010 the Festival celebrated its 90th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Great Festival Hall.

Barenboim, in 2010 also celebrated his 60th anniversary onstage, excelled as a soloist and conductor of Beethoven’s lyrical Fourth Piano Concerto. Bruckner´s poignant Te Deum is performed by a quartet of world-class singers.

“there is no doubting the powerful authority that characterizes Barenboim's direction of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto from the keyboard. Perhaps rather unexpectedly, the magic really starts with a reading of Boulez's Notations I-IV and VII (finishing with II), whose intoxicating allure and expressivity is strongly reminiscent of the kind of sound Karajan generated in his classic Second Viennese School recordings of the 1970s.” International Record Review, January 2012

Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Tomáš Hanus (conductor) & Martin Kušej (stage director)

This highly acclaimed production from the Bayerische Staatsoper was a veritable sensation and the performance of up-and-coming Latvian soprano, Kristīne Opolais was rightly hailed by the press as “one of the most vivid and striking accomplishments seen on an opera stage in a long time” (Vienna’s leading daily “Der Standard”).

With her supple and velvety soprano voice, her captivating physical beauty and her hauntingly moving stage presence, Kristine Opolais perfectly embodies the role of water nymph who becomes a human being in order to find love.

Directed by renowned director Martin Kušej.

Recorded at the Bayerische Staatsoper, 2010.

“Not for the faint-hearted, Martin Kusej’s 2010 Munich production...transposes Dvorák’s water nymphs and goblins to the living-nightmare contemporary world of Josef Fritzl...there’s no denying the power of the staging. The soprano Kristine Opolais is a revelation in the title role and the music outstanding under Tomas Hanus’s baton.” The Times, 13th August 2011 ****

“Whatever reservations one might have about the production, the performance as a whole is remarkable. The cast has clearly bought into the producer's concept and they deliver a devastating ensemble performance. Kristine Opolais as Rusalka is vocally superb and acts magnificently..Tomáš Hanus draws some wonderful playing from the Bavarian State Orchestra and paces the musical-dramatic flow flawlessly.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2011 ****

“[Kusej imposes] on Dvorak's work a harrowingly contemporary sexual violence. This is in its way a riveting conception, although it eliminates every trace of romance from the opera...Opolais's Rusalka exudes all-out commitment. The young Latvian soprano moves, acts and sings beautifully...Singing with velvety tone of imposing breadth, Gunther Groissbock proves terrifyingly convincing in putting across Kusej's dissolute, sexually brutal view of the Water Goblin.” International Record Review, September 2011

“In Martin Kusej’s brilliantly executed, up-to-the-minute interpretation of Dvorák’s fairy tale, first seen in Munich a year ago, Rusalka is the victim of a psychopathic abductor (the water goblin), irretrievably damaged in body and mind...Opolais gives a harrowing performance, at the head of a strong cast” Financial Times, 17th September 2011 *****

“The grim modern tale is acted out with undeniable intensity. Kristine Opolais's Rusalka may not have the vocal beauty of some but she gives her all in a moving portrayal...Vogt is almost perfectly cast, capturing equally the poetic naivety and Wagnerian grandeur of Dvorak's music. There could be no more frightening Fritzl/Water Goblin than Günther Groissböck...The conductor, Tomáš Hanus, paces the score with energy” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011

“Some scenes are almost unwatchable…But it's superbly done and is notable for a brave, perhaps career-best performance from Kristine Opolais in the title role. Klaus Florian Vogt is her emotionally insensitive Prince; Gunther Groissböck her truly horrifying father. It's forcefully conducted by Tomáš Hanus, too.” The Guardian, 8th December 2011 ***
