Amid the countless small salon forms evoked by fashion in the mid-1800s, the sonata form continued to reign supreme. Chopin’s sonatas are among his best-loved works and the most gorgeously composed sonatas of the time. Up and coming pianist Eugéne Mursky executes all three with style and musicianship to spare.

Rather like Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's Songs Without Words, Frédéric Chopin's songs are peripheral to his oeuvre, but he composed them throughout his life.

His songs, which largely amounted to occasional works written between 1829 and 1847, were probably intended for performance in salons.

Like the piano works, they often reflect biographical situations in which single emotions dominate: his love for women and for his distant homeland.

Profil’s Frédéric Chopin series has so far featured the Ballads and Impromptus (Vol. 1), Waltzes (Vol. 2), Polonaises (Vol. 3) and the Etudes (Vol. 4), and now the next in the series continues with a selection of more of his finest works.

His previous volumes have all been well received by the press and Eugene Mursky has proved that he is a first-rate pianist definitely worthy of his international competition success. He was awarded 1st Prize in the prestigious World Piano Competition, 1994, and also the Chopin Prize for the best Chopin interpretation.

Chopin composed his 27 études between 1828 and 1840, a long period relative to his short life. They are the foundation of a new system of technical piano playing that was radical and revolutionary the first time they appeared. These études are made of some of the most challenging and simultaneously evocative pieces of all the works in concert piano repertoire. Because of this, the music remains popular and often performed works in both concert and private stages.
