Bizet: Roma

Bizet: Roma

Bizet:

Roma, symphony for orchestra in C major

Marche funebre in B minor

Overture in A minor

Patrie Overture, Op. 19

Jeux d'enfants (Petite Suite), Op. 22

The success of Bizet’s opera Carmen has overshadowed the rest of his output, but this fascinating orchestral programme, which includes a number of seldom performed works, reveals more of his talent for writing colourful, atmospheric and melodic music. The Overture in A was Bizet’s first orchestral work and unperformed in his lifetime, while the Marche funèbre was originally the prelude to an opera about love and vengeance, now lost. The dramatic overture Patrie captures the mood following the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, while the Petite suite is a set of orchestrations of movements from Jeux d’enfants (Children’s Games). Conceived in Italy as a symphony, after Bizet had won the Prix de Rome, Roma occupied the composer for 11 years before the final version heard here.

“this disc offers delights aplenty, not least thanks to Jean-Luc Tingaud's stylish and alert conducting...The word that springs to mind is 'punctilio', defined by Chambers as 'exact observance of forms'. Everything is in place, nothing is rushed, even at the fastest tempo, and nothing drags at the slowest.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2015 *****

“Tingaud and his admirably eager and scrupulously prepared RTÉ forces do [Bizet] proud…vividly realistic sound is the icing on the cake of another irresitible bargain from this stylish partnership. More please!” Gramophone Magazine, May 2015

Dukas: L'apprenti sorcier, La péri & Symphony in C Major

Dukas: L'apprenti sorcier, La péri & Symphony in C Major

Dukas:

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Fanfare to La Peri

La Péri

Symphony in C major

Paul Dukas is famed for his brilliant, meticulously scored symphonic scherzo The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, first performed in 1897, which almost immediately entered the international repertoire. It was subsequently the focus of a ballet and later Walt Disney’s film Fantasia. Magical scoring is also a feature of La péri, a poème dansé of great imaginative verve. The delightful, colourful Symphony in C was composed mid-way between these works. For this recording, manuscript sources for the three works were consulted, including the hitherto private proofs of the first edition of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, ensuring rigorously faithful performances.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is one of the great orchestral showpieces and internationally famous. It was used in the Disney film, Fantasia. La Péri is less well-known but delightfully orchestrated and full of interest. The Symphony in C is not as often performed as it should be for so colourful a score - but it has attracted on disc conductors such as Yan-Pascal Tortelier, Jean Fournet, Jean Martinon, Walter Weller, Leonard Slatkin and a number of others. For this recording the original manuscript sources for all three works have been consulted, ensuring that the composer’s intentions are honoured.

“Dukas’s music sometimes comes close to the so-called impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. But while never neglecting those colouristic aspects, Tingaud’s big-boned performances show how its stylistic roots reach back into a much wider range of 19th-century European models.” The Guardian, 27th November 2014 ****

“a warm welcome to this clear-headed and uncommonly sensitive account under Jean-Luc Tingaud. Not only does the Frenchman secure a commendably polished and infectiously enthusiastic response from the RTE National SO..., he shapes tihs glorious msuic with pleasing character, flexibility and authority.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2015

“It is clearly a labour of love for conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud. He has not only polished the playing of the RTE National Symphony Orchestra to a beguiling level of Gallic sparkle, but also consulted manuscript sources for all three works...in Tingaud's hands, there is plenty of space for the delicate finesses of Dukas's orchestration.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2015 ****

“There are sumptuous passages of great beauty - sun-drenched and languid sounds with stunning orchestration…this is most movingly presented with a true cantabile tone and a real sense of longing. Listeners who enjoy rich, harmonic romantic scoring will be at home here.” MusicWeb International, February 2015

Freitas Branco - Orchestral Works Volume 1

Freitas Branco - Orchestral Works Volume 1

Freitas Branco:

Symphony No. 1

Scherzo Fantastique

World Première Recording

Suite Alentejana No. 1

Luís de Freitas Branco was a pre-eminent figure in Portuguese music of the first half of the twentieth century. This first disc of a four-volume series of Freitas Branco’s orchestral works features the First Symphony, in which the influence of César Franck, Brahms and French musical impressionism is assimilated into his own musical style. The Scherzo Fantastique is a short single movement work, brilliantly orchestrated yet extremely controlled in its use of the orchestral forces. The Suite Alentejana No. 1 is based on the rich musical folklore of the Alentejo, a region of Portugal south of Lisbon where Freitas Branco spent many of his summers.

Rhapsodietta Joyceana

RTE National Symphony Orchestra, Gavin Maloney

Rhapsodic Bowing for 8 Celli

RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra Cello Octet

Duetti Irlandesi for Cello and Piano

Fergal Caulfield (piano)

Martin Johnson (cello)

Soloist Martin Johnson explores Frank Corcoran’s writing for cello in all its nuances, from the swagger of a concerto and the rhapsodic polyphony of his work for eight cellos through to composer’s arrangements of folk tunes for cello and piano informed by the rhythmic patois of the Irish language. Frank Corcoran has lived and taught in Germany for most of his professional life but has retained a profound connection with the literature and traditional music of his native country. It is this distance from and relationship with Ireland that informs so much of his music: directly, as in the case his short Rhapsodietta Joyceana for solo cello and, more subtly, in the tensile interplay between soloist and orchestra in his first Cello Concerto.

Jerome de Bromhead: Orchestral Music

Jerome de Bromhead: Orchestral Music

Bromhead:

A Lay for a Light Year

Violin Concerto

Alan Smale (violin)

Symphony No. 2

The vitality of these three works by the Irish composer Jerome de Bromhead (b. 1945) point to the sheer pleasure that their creator takes in writing music.

The swirling ebullience of the tone-poem A Lay for a Light Year (2014) suggests the scale and energy of the cosmos.

The edgy, elegiac lyricism of the Violin Concerto (2008) inhabits textures that are brittle and clear like Stravinsky’s.

The more chromatic Second Symphony (1994) suggests a vast sense of space behind a glittering foreground of kaleidoscopic orchestral colours.

A member of his family, Lt Gonville Bromhead, who fought in the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, was made famous when Michael Caine played the part of Lt Bromhead in the 1964 film Zulu.

“De Bromhead is an interesting prospect and his music on this evidence encompasses neon-lit dream textures and imposingly statuesque brass writing. The music feels well organised and efficient.” MusicWeb International, August 2017

Last September a unique festival of music took place sponsored by Bord na Móna and presented by RTÉ and the National Concert Hall as part of RTÉ 2016 and Ireland 2016. This Composing the Island double CD release is a sample of music by twenty-composers from that festival, capturing for posterity something of its essence and spirit. It includes works by composers from the earliest years, many whom have been almost forgotten now, like Norman Hay and Ina Boyle, the latter of whom lived all her life in Wicklow but created a remarkable body of music whose European sensibility is tinged with a clear sense of her own nationality. Others such as John F. Larchet, Aloys Fleischmann and Seán Ó Riada played a key role in the teaching and development of music, and musical institutions in Ireland in the twentieth century. Ó Riada’s work on the CD, two movements from his Hercules Dux Ferrariae: Nomos No. 1, gives a fresh insight into his orchestral output, an area often overlooked in preference to his better known forays into traditional Irish music.
