Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Kirill Petrenko (conductor), Dmitri Tcherniakov (director)

Lulu, Alban Berg’s hauntingly mysterious opera in a new production by Dmitri Tcherniakov, has been one of the major events of the 2015 Bayerische Staatsoper season : an ideal setting for conductor Kirill Petrenko first-ever DVD recording ! A sensuous and impenetrable opera, Berg’s masterpiece depicts the burning and sometimes bestial intensity of human relationships through the figure of Lulu, the true femme fatale, bearer of an enigma that haunts us way beyond the end of the opera. Venenous, sibylline, deathly for who approaches her, the dangerous Lulu destroys the established and bourgeois order she evolves in, carrying away with her all certainty, just like the audacious and demanding musical language Berg invented to give form to this unreachable character. Frank Wedekind’s work proved indeed to be an extremely fertile ground for the dodecaphonic composer’s imagination, and gave birth to one of the most singular and ambitious work of art of the twentieth century. With the privilege of a dream cast, gathering Berg’s best interprets, this new production of Lulu is conducted by Kirill Petrenko, and staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov. A visionary genius considered as the contemporary stage ‘enfant terrible’, it is with a shattering realism that he directs those characters, hostages to their own passions and darkest fantasies, and reveals the complexity of this great human and social tragedy. Marlis Petersen is Lulu, a role she was then singing for the ninth time, and which awarded her, for this production, the title of ‘singer of the year’ by German magazine Opernwelt

It’s not generally known that Max Reger, while gradually adding to his own catalogue, turned to arranging works by other composers as a form of relaxation between producing his own compositions. Unlike Reger’s original works for voice and orchestra, which largely reflect the tradition of the French orchestral song, his arrangements were usually made with staging considerations in mind.

“There’s some superb singing here…’Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer’ is creepily introverted, and [Iranyi is] charming in Reger’s own ‘Wiegenlied’. Tenor and baritone, Rainer Trost and Paul Armin Edelmann, are both outstanding…Gregor Bühl’s conducting is admirably spacious and unhurried…he brings out the beauty of Reger’s instrumentation to perfection” Gramophone Magazine, December 2016

Mayr: Samuele

Mayr: Samuele

Andrea Lauren Brown (Samuele), Susanne Bernhard (Anna), Rainer Trost (Elcana) & Jens Hamann (Eli)

Simon Mayr Choir & Ingolstadt Georgian Chamber Orchestra, Franz Hauk

Influential, popular and prolific in his day, Bavarian born Simon Mayr left his mark in providing a bridge between Northern classicism and the bel canto of Italy, his adopted country of residence. The oratorio Samuele deals with the calling of Samuel as a prophet, and was written in 1821 for the consecration of Pietro Mola as Bishop of Bergamo. Mayr set his oratorio to the Poesia of one of his pupils, Bartolomeo Merelli, the collaboration resulting in a fascinating work which combines theology with dramatic innovation such as the use of ‘melodrama’ or spoken text.

“Samuele is unusual because it is mainly made up of parodies of some of the composer’s previous operas...The breezy recitatives and arias sung by Andrea Lauren Brown (Samuele) are adorable for their legato, effortless top notes and sincerity of delivery...This enjoyable recording is well defined and attractive” MusicWeb International, August 2012

The Naxos Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition: Schubert set the poetry of over 115 writers to music. He selected poems from classical Greece, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, from eighteenth-century German authors, early Romantics, Biedermeier poets, and Heine. The Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition presents all Schubert’s Lieder, over 700 songs, grouped according to the poets who inspired him.

Thanks to Bärenreiter’s Neue Schubert-Ausgabe (New Schubert Edition), Tübingen, which uses primary sources, the performers have been able to benefit from the most recent research of the editorial team. This disc is the third of a series devoted to Schubert’s friends, including Mayrhofer.

Volumes One and Two are available on 8554799 and 8557171, while two discs devoted exclusively to Mayrhofer are available on 8554738 and 8554739.

“This is one of the most taxing Schubert programmes ever assembled, and Trost is sensational throughout, conjuring up a unique emotionial or narrative world for each song by means of vocal or verbal dexterity.” Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 12th September 2008 *****

Emmerich Kálmán’s music fuses Hungarian folk melodies and the Viennese waltz, displaying operatic and melodramatic elements, and illustrating the “American dance” style of the time. It also offers exotic tonal colours like those of the tárogató, and rhythms designed to evoke faraway climes. This work numbers among the highlights in Kálmán’s operetta oeuvre. In 2014 the WDR presented a concert performance of The Bayadere and then went on to produce this work in the studio. We are happy and proud now to be able to release this benchmark production on cpo.

Although Joseph Haydn is still regarded principally as a master of instrumental music, he was also one of the forward-looking opera composers of his day, devoting a significant portion of his working life to the genre. As the opera director for Prince Esterházy, he oversaw more than a thousand opera productions at the Esterházy court, which included popular stage works of the time, as well as his own. These two operas are unusual and ahead of their time in that it is women who take centre stage. These female protagonists are people of real flesh and blood, strong, pragmatic, and clearly representative of the spirit of the Enlightenment.
