Nationality: Italian

Italian tenor Francesco Meli was born in 1980 in Genoa, where he studied at the Conservatorio di Musica ‘Niccolo Paganini’, making his debut as Verdi’s Macduff at the Spoleto Festival aged just 22. At the beginning of his career, Meli sang numerous Donizetti roles including Percy in Anna Bolena, Leicester in Maria Stuarda (which he performed at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera), Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor and Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia, but he has become increasingly associated with Verdi; he is in particular demand for relative rarities such as I Lombardi, Giovanna d’Arco, which he recorded opposite Placido Domingo and Anna Netrebko in 2014 and performed at La Scala the following year and I due Foscari, which he sang at Covent Garden (again opposite Domingo) later that same season.

His discography includes the Verdi Requiem with Gianandrea Noseda and the London Symphony Orchestra, Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle with Antonio Pappano, Anna Bolena from the Wiener Staatsoper on DVD and Blu-ray (with Anna Netrebko as the queen), and a Rosenblatt recital on Opus Arte with the pianist Iain Burnside.
