Nationality: German

The German violist Tabea Zimmermann was born in Lahr in 1966 and trained in Freiburg and at the Salzburg Mozarteum, where her teachers includes Sándor Végh; early competition successes included wins at the Geneva International Competition in 1982 and the Budapest International Competition two years later.

Zimmermann is renowned for her commitment to new music, and has premiered works by composers including Wolfgang Rihm, György Ligeti, Heinz Holliger and Sally Beamish. Her discography includes Berlioz’s Harold en Italie with François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles, Es war einmal (an album of fairy-tale-inspired music by Jörg Widmann and Robert Schumann, which won a Diapason d’Or and an Opus Klassik Award in 2018), a Gramophone Award-winning recording of the Bartók concerto with her late husband David Shallon, and the complete viola works of Paul Hindemith on Myrios.
