Gabriele Schnaut

Gabriele Schnaut (Soprano)

Born: 24th February 1951, Mannheim, Germany

Nationality: German

The German soprano Gabriele Schnaut was born in Mnnheim in 1951 and trained in Mainz and Frankfurt, beginning her career at the Sataatsoper Stuttgart as a mezzo; she debuted at Bayreuth in 1977 as Waltraute and Second Norn in Patrice Chéreau’s landmark Ring Cycle (now available on DVD), and by the mid-1980s had transitioned into soprano repertoire, singing her first Isolde in Dortmund in 1985. Throughout the 1990s she appeared at many of the world’s major houses in höchdramatische roles such as Brünnhilde, Elektra, Kundry and the Dyer’s Wife in Die Frau ohne Schatten as well as in dramatic Italian roles including Turandot and Tosca. Schnaut has also created roles in new operas by Jörg Widmann and Wolfgang Rihm.

On reaching her sixties, Schnaut reverted to mezzo repertoire and continues to perform widely in roles including Herodias in Salome, the Kostelnicka in Jenůfa and Klytaemnestra in Elektra. Her discography includes Brünnhilde on Zubin Mehta’s live recording of Die Walküre from the Bayerische Staatsoper and Christoph von Dohnanyi’s 1992 recording on Decca, Ortrud on Peter Schneider’s Lohengrin from the Bayreuth Festival (available on DVD and CD), Bach cantatas with Helmuth Rilling, and Wolfgang Rihm’s Der Hamletmaschine (on which she creates the role of Ophelia) on Wergo.
