Jeannine Altmeyer (Soprano)

Born: 2nd May 1948, Pasadena, California

Nationality: American

American dramatic soprano Jeannine Altmeyer was born in California in 1948 and studied in Santa Barbara (where her teachers included Lotte Lehmann); she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1970 and made her debut on the main stage the following year as the Voce dal Cielo in Verdi’s Don Carlos. After singing small Wagner roles in Salzburg, London and Chicago, she made her Bayreuth debut as Sieglinde and Gutrune in Patrice Chéreau’s 1979 Ring Cycle (available on a Grammy-winning DVD set) and went on to expand her Wagner repertoire to include Elsa, Elisabeth, Eva, Isolde, and Brünnhilde.

Her discography also includes Leonore on Kurt Masur’s 1982 recording of Fidelio, and Brunnhilde on Marek Janowski’s first recording of The Ring Cycle and in Pierre Audi’s production from the Dutch National Opera on DVD.
