Nadine Secunde (Soprano)

Born: 21st December 1953, Independence, Ohio, USA

Nationality: American

The American soprano Nadine Secunde was born in Ohio in 1953 and trained at the Oberlin Conservatory and in Stuttgart before beginning her career in Wiesbaden and subsequently being engaged as an ensemble-member at the Köln Oper. Initially making her mark in lyric roles such as Strauss’s Arabella and Janáček’s Katya Kabanová, she made her Bayreuth debut as Elsa in 1987, and throughout the 1990s was in great international demand for roles including Sieglinde, Elisabeth and later on Isolde and Brünnhilde as well as Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth, Berg’s Marie, Berlioz’s Cassandre, and Strauss’s Elektra.

Secunde’s discography includes Sieglinde on Daniel Barenboim’s Ring Cycle on Warner Classics and (on DVD) Pierre Audi’s production from Dutch National Opera, Chrysothemis on Seiji Ozawa’s Elektra, the title-role in Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel for Neeme Järvi on Deutsche Grammophon, and Miss Jessel on Steuart Bedford’s recording of The Turn of the screw from the 1993 Aldeburgh Festival.
