Michaela Schuster

Michaela Schuster (Mezzo-Soprano)

Born: 1966, Bavaria, Germany

Nationality: German

German mezzo Michaela Schuster was born in Bavaria and beganher musical life as an oboist; she trained at the Salzburg Mozarteum and in Berlin before beginning her career as an ensemble-member at Darmstadt Opera, where her roles included Massenet’s Charlotte and Giulietta in Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann. Schuster went freelance in 2002 and quickly established herself as one of today’s leading dramatic mezzos – though her repertoire includes numerous Italian roles, she is particularly associated with Wagner and Strauss (Die Amme in Die Frau ohne schatten is one of her signature-roles, and she is also a celebrated Ortrud, Venus, Brangaene and Kundry).

Schuster’s discography includes Herodias on Andres Orozco-=Estrada’s Gramophone award-nominated Salome on Pentatone (The Sunday Times observed that ‘Schuster is venomous with the text, yet always sings the notes beautifully’), Caesonia in the live recording of the premiere of Detlev Glanert’s Caligula, a lieder-recital entitled Morgen!, and (on DVD) Ortrud in Richard Jones’s Lohengrin from the Bavarian State Opera and Die Frau ohne Schatten from Glyndebourne (‘The stand-out onstage is Michaela Schuster (Nurse), vocally magnificent and revelling in her characterization’ – International Record Review).
