The English cellist Matthew Barley was born in 1965 and studied at the Moscow Conservatoire and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama; he is particularly associated with contemporary repertoire and improvisation, having premiered works by composers including James MacMillan, Pascal Dusapin, John Metcalfe and Thomas Larcher, and regularly collaborates with non-classical musicians such as Jon Lord, Django Bates, Julian Joseph and Nitin Sawhney.

Barley’s discography includes The Peasant Girl (with his violinist wife Viktoria Mullova), John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil and Svyati, Jon Lord’s Durham Concerto, and Around Britten, which grew out of a project which saw Barley perform the solo cello suites in 100 venues across the country as a centenary tribute to the composer.
