Brecon Baroque (Early Music Ensemble)

The one-per-part early music ensemble Brecon Baroque was founded by violinist Rachel Podger in 2007, two years after she took over the Brecon Baroque Festival; regular players include the violist Jane Rogers, cellist Alison McGillivray and flautist Katie Bircher. The group’s recording debut of the JS Bach violin concertos on Channel Classics in 2010 saw them described as a ‘crack squad of first-rate period-instrument musicians’ (BBC), whilst The Times observed that ‘Podger’s six supporting musicians play alongside with exquisite skill and freshness...and provide a thrilling kaleidoscope of colours’. Subsequent recordings have included Bach’s double and triple concertos, Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico (which won the concerto prize at the 2015 BBC Music Magazine Awards and was a finalist in the baroque instrumental category at the same year’s Gramophone Awards), The Art of Fugue, and a widely acclaimed account of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, all on Channel.
