The Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi was born in Locarno in 1983 and was mentored by Alfred Brendel; his early successes included the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2007, a Borletti-Buitoni fellowship, and a place on BBC Radio Three’s new Generation Artists programme. In 2012 his solo album of Handel, Brahms, Bach and Liszt on the Avanti label won him the Newcomer Award at the BBC Music Magazine Awards; his discography also includes Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 25 and 26 with Andrew Manze and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (‘a Mozartian to cherish’ – The Observer), the first year of Liszt’s Années de pélerinage (a Times Record of the Year in 2018), the Debussy Préludes on Naïve, and the Respighi Violin Sonata with Renaud Capucon at the 2013 Lugano Festival.
